I have been going to physical therapy for my lower back.
Learning new stretches and exercises that help a lot!
Similar to yoga

Today we worked on core and balance.

Think you have good balance and core?
Try this

Feet together
Fold your arms
Bend one leg up

You are supposed to be able to do this for a min of 20 secs.
Without wobbling too much
Easy?

Try this....
Same thing, now close your eyes and do it.
Still easy?

Now try this...
Same thing.
Feet together
Folded arms
Lift one leg
Eyes shut
Now, turn your head left and right real slow

Did you wobble??
Try lifting each leg and see which one is best.

Got balance?

It is harder with the eyes closed. I am balanced till I turn my head. Funny how the eyes effect things.

It doesn\'t help that I feel nausea before this because of vertigo. I was working under my car just a few minutes ago and that just kills me lately. Sometimes it takes a day or two to get equalized. I need to go see the chiro and see if that helps. I hate not being able to lay down and stand up without feeling sick.

I failed.

Do you hold the leg straight out or bend the knee of the leg you lift up?

In 1983, I lost my balance for a year due to left ear nerve damage. I seemed drunk all the time walking into door jams. I stopped drinking because of it. Ever since, I work on my balance a lot. I could downhill ski on one ski for short distances. However, I can\'t do your exercises well. I need more work.

A frequent exercise I do is going up and down on one leg while brushing my teeth or waiting for something in the microwave. Doing this daily makes a big difference.

Recently, I could not get rid of lower back pain. After 10 years of Chiropractors telling to get an Inversion table, I got one last month. Yoga and SI joint exercises were not working. Inversion tables are GREAT! I felt much better within a couple of days of hanging upside down.

Have your son tie you upside down from a tree.

The PT lady said as a person ages they need to do more of these exercises.
She did mention to do just what Patricia said and lift one leg while brushing your teeth.

Patricia
Lift your leg by bending your knee

I could do it fine with my eyes open. I kinda stink at it, after I close them.

There is a reason I posted this.

I mentioned to her that I will be in the mtns hunting elk for most of Sept so she showed me this stuff.
As we hike in uneven terrain, the chances of injury go up if our bodies arent used to sudden changes in steps or balances.

Like stepping off a curb.
Our body knows its 8in because we have done it time after time.
But if there a dip or slip, its your body\'s ability to balance that recovers you without injury

This why I failed miserably for the Mount Princeton climb (14er) 2 weeks ago. 2100 ft elevation gain through solid talus. My legs were fine. I was a total klutz, so I had to turn around because of safety. I trained for building muscle in my legs, but I did not train for balance.

Good stuff! I\'ve been doing these types of balance/core exercises for about 5 years after herniating two discs in my back. Wanna take it to the next level? Do all the things Brad mentions while on a small cheap trampoline while doing alternating bicep curls. This is a killer core workout as well as a great way to get ankle and knee ligaments tuned up for elk season. Maintenance is easier than rehab!

I play around sometime doing Pistol Squats. Good for balance and a great leg workout. Try them. They are tough.

Did yoga this morning ... balance is so important. Since I\'ve started doing P90x a few years ago, my balance has improved a ton.

I think this type of exercise is so important as we get older. I see a ton of older folks who would otherwise be healthy, but they have poor strength and balance. Because of that, a \"healthy\" person is just as confined to boredom as a fairly sick one!

I don\'t like being confined to boredom.

The defining feature of aging is loss of muscle mass. Keep it!

Balance gets better with two things: strength, and practice.

It also gets worse with two things: weakness, and sloth. Avoid them.

Falls in the elderly are a huge killer. A friend called the other day. His father in law fell and broke his hip. The statistics on broken hips in old men are horrible. He has about a 1:3 chance of resuming \"life as normal\" within a year, and by that I mean \"life at home\". He has a worse prognosis for death than a woman of the same age diagnosed with breast cancer. I wouldn\'t be surprised to learn that he doesn\'t survive the year, though he \"probably\" will.

All because he didn\'t have balance and strength.

No balance here at all unless I have both feet on the ground. I lost it when I had a total knee replacement a year ago. Somehow or another they injured my pearneal nerve and I have very little feeling on the outside of my calf, the outside of my foot, and all of my toes.

I found I have no balance a long time ago but it\'s really starting to show now... Last Sept during early teal season I ended up on my knees in knee deep water several times trying to swing with the little fast fliers... I\'ve gotten to a point when I know I\'m going to fall I go to my knees... That helps unless you are in deep enough water you chin gets wet...
