I've recently made the decision to pursue and Elk and possibly other game with  my bow.  I've never hunted Elk before and would prefer to hire an outfitter.  As they saying goes, I don't know what I don't know and would love some help is finding a great outfitter.  I'll be traveling from IL and don't really have a preference on a specific state but I'm thinking CO or MT.

Do appreciate the help fellow pursuing brother & sisters.

I've never been on a guided hunt so I'm not going to be much help there but I would suggest picking up whatever elk hunting videos you can find, listen to the calling, get a few different calls and start practicing your own calling.

MT is draw only for out of staters but recently there have been extra tags left over from the draw.  There are a lot of good hunts in CO, if you have a point or 2 you can draw some of the easier to draw tags and have a better quality hunt.

I'm sure others will have some good advise and hopefully can recommend a good guide.

Good Luck

If you are looking to go with a guide, then I would give the Winterhawk guys a call.  They will set you up on the largest herd in the country, and your chances of success will be pretty good.  It will be up to you to hit the mark when the time comes.  You're not going to be chasing monster bulls, but there are some nice elk up on the flat tops (i saw a beautiful 310-330" 6x6 last year).  I'm hoping he'll be in the same spot this year waiting for me, but 350" this time  :D

Call Jim Schell with Rough Country Outfitters. He has hunts in Wyoming and you could draw with no points, you will draw with 1 point which you can buy in Sept (if I remember right). He hunts private land and you will get into elk.

I have never used aguide but If you can afford one then that is the way to go if you dont know an area,I talk to lots of out of staters in my area and most  will not even see an elk. Some one who knows the area is a must.its allot of money to spend,I would say guid the first year or two.Im from montana and I dont keep up on out of state tag system,if its a draw only now as stated above than that is new to me I will have to check.

I'm from MT. The whole western half of the state is pretty good. Like someone else said. It is a draw only deal, but the last two years there have been leftover tags because it costs alot of $ to get a tag. I dunno why its so high. Pretty much anywhere you pick to go in Montana from about Bozeman west is pretty good. If you hunt hard you will connect with a bull. If you call the state wildlife biologist he would probably help you out a lot and then after he recommends a place to go then contact the biologist over that area because he will have a pretty good knowledge of the area. I have never personally hunted by Missoula but I hear there are monster bulls up there.
