I called the District Manager for the Creede District as I plan on burning my 15 CO points this year. He told me the snow was 150 percent, but the temps where not bad at all this winter and he thought there would be no major impact on the elk herd. He told me that he thought the snow was going to help with growth this spring and that the elk looked good. There was some concern on the deer herd but at the time I talked with him (two weeks ago) it was too early to say if there should be any concern. Not sure how other parts of the state where looking but this area seemed like it was going to be fine.

CPW will also present the latest information on winter deer-survival monitoring.
CPW staff will also be available to answer questions about applying for big game licenses for those who need assistance.
I think the elk will be fine some died but not too many.
The deer on the other hand is another story the guys over at the CPW are saying to expect tag cuts to all the deer season this year - that is not a good thing as we know right now priority #1 for CPW is to make $ and cutting tags does not help w that...
As per the mule deer tag recommendation meeting held yesterday tags are getting cut big in the basin.
50% reduction in tags in 66/67..
60% reduction in 54...
70% to 80% tag reduction in 55 and 551....
The winter was that hard on the deer and everyone is in agreement that the basin will be heavily effected by this winter and need some time to recover.
Dang, I just went and looked and almost all of those hunts already require preference points to draw the tags currently. Talk about some major point creep that is about to happen!
