Have never been hunting before

Hello everyone,

My name is Cherokee, I live near Ann Arbor MI, and I've never been hunting before.  My step-dad and grandfather used to hunt, but I was never invited because it was "boy time," and now that I am interested in learning to hunt, they claim they are "too old" to go.  I am primarily interested in learning to elk hunt because I think it tastes better than deer, and also because one elk would easily feed my family for over a year.  I only have deer in my area, but am willing to venture out to places where I can hunt for elk.  I am also going to school to be a teacher and am hoping to move to Wyoming or Colorado where the teaching market is promising, and I hear elk hunting is quite popular out there.  I don't know anything about guns (but would like to) and overall just have no idea how to even get started.  I was hoping that I could get some help by joining this forum.  Does anyone have any comments or suggestions?  Please and thank you in advance!  :)

Join the RMEF and go to some local banquets. Offer to help out a chapter. A lot of great people there who are willing to help you out, when they figure out that you not just trolling.

Thank you very much for your suggestion, sir.  I just looked them up and it appears there is one in Saginaw and Sandusky, which isn't too far from me.  I'll check them out!

I would seriously consider contacting MI DNR and learning about programs they might have for new-never-been hunters.

I know I read an article about Wisconsin (and then Minnesota closely followed suit behind) lead a "cutting edge" type program for adult-learn-to-hunt programs geared specifically toward the localvore/hipster movement of unconventional hunters that are really interested in pure organic meat. They started by recruiting in big cities at natural and organic food co-op's. It's been a big hit in the Midwest and wouldn't surprise me if MI had something like that.

Most states these days have full blown hunter recruitment/retention offices that have programs set up for individuals exactly like yourself.

Afternoon. Yes I totally agree with all of what has been said so far. Perhaps you can acquaint yourself with a group of friends or people who are avid hunters that could teach you a few things or if you are in the market for a gentleman then make sure he hunts as well. Lucky guy for sure. I would also recommend taking classes for things like hunters education or safety. I know here in the south we have to have that certification and I am sure everywhere else does to. It is a helpful class. Just don't surround yourself with outlaws because then you might pick up some bad habits. haha. well I do wish you the best of luck.

spend the money and take the UEH online course and you will be years ahead of most beginners, If you really plan on elk hunting it will be well worth the money

So glad that you want to hunt! Note that women are probably the largest growing sector in the hunting industry right now, it wants you! All suggestions are good ones here. The other thing I did not see is that you will NEED to have a hunter safety course and certificate (either bowhunting or gun or both). I don't know of a state that doesn't require you to hav3e one anymore unless your older like me and I still have to provide data. Check for a local hunter safety course through the DNR. It will help you, and probably hook you up with other new hunters to. Share the challenge of learning to hunt, its more fun that way.
