JJ\'s elk post got me thinking.

where i live it doesnt happen. too many animal lovers, too many lawyers. but i imagine some regions welcome hunters with open arms.
\\
i remember a story.

my parents opened a restaurant. a chinese restaurant. i worked there while i was in college. my brother was in the police academy. i notice a nice elderly couple come in..i noted their south dakota plates. i am not shy. i got them talking. eventually the conversation went to hunting. pronghorn hunting!! they told me the state of SD gives them money to open up their ranch to hunting. so they welcome hunters. i asked them if they would allow us to hunt. they said \"YES!! oh you can come! we have so many antelope on our property\". i saw my brother pull up..and i excused myself to tell my brother..

i went back to the table to talk more..\"oh, we have a request...we would love you two to meet our daughters\" me, i was like \"HELLS YES!\" country girls..with land!\"\" my brother (thank God for his sound logic) said..\"what do you suppose is wrong with these girls that makes the parents desperate enough to try to pimp them out to two complete strangers..that are Asian\"

cold splash of water..i got the couple\'s phone number and address..paid for their food (\"oh, no..this is on me\")..i still havent made it out to South Dakota. i bet i still have the address. somewhere. my wife and i are planning on seeing Mt Rushmore..maybe i should spotting scope the land..hahah..

i wonder if my brother still remembers that story.

when i was a kid most everyone would let me hunt on them in northern mo. now no one will. even guys i grew up with a were good friends say no to hunting. to much money in leasing.

Heck yeah!
I try to meet people anywhere I go.
I find a place online, look up who owns it and give them a call!
Or drive by a field and see a rancher/farmer out working and stop and chat.

Do I get shot down sometimes? Sure Do
But the reward outweighs the risk by a lot!
If I get the negative, i ask if they know of someone that allows hunting.
Then off I go!

What\'s your method of looking up who owns it? Whenever I\'ve tried in the past, I get to the a local government and they want me to drive in to get that information. Not going to happen when its 4 hours away.

I\'ve got a couple pieces of property scoped out for pronghorn hunting. We\'ve been within visual of them during the season and never saw anyone hunting that land. The pronghorn seem to know it. :D

I know WI each county has a GIS system with aerial photos and maps with all the landowners and tax records for each parcel. There are some counties that aren\'t completely mapped out but most are.

Edit: I just googled Gunnison county GIS and got their map with owner info.

Way to dig. I won\'t use it this year, so I think the Mods should start a \"Quick Link\" sticky in the tips section to store all those good map links. That way I don\'t have to come back to search this thread. Good job Vanish.
