I purchased the KME sharpening kit this winter, have been playing with it a bit lately. I guess I\'m still not that great as I am having trouble getting a really really sharp blade on a couple of my knives. Apparently I need to read and watch more videos, this kit was suppose to be dummy proof. :crazy:
I have a Gatco, too, and ... in my hands, it\'s \"ok\" ... I can get stuff pretty sharp, but I wouldn\'t say \"scary\" sharp.
When I am serious about sharpening, I then get out the strop and yellowstone compound. They say that that helps put a final touch on and polish the blade which adds to the longevity of the sharpness.

I\'ve used Buck since I was a youngster. A good solid American company that I like a lot.
I just bought a Buck 119. More for protection than skinning. I\'m not a fan of bear spray on black bear. It works better on grizz. The 119 is like a small bowie knife. I figure if I get attacked i\'ll probably still die, but at least I can go down stabbing.

I use a DMT folding diamond stone(red and blue). I reworked the edges on my trusty Buck and my kershaw blur to scary sharp levels. Now it takes a few swipes on the stone to keep them that way. When I bought my blur I thought it would be difficult to sharpen the s30v steel but it sharpened right up to better then factory. The recurve is a little tough to deal with but the narrow stone helps with that.

LOL..When I was in Alaska I used a .458 mag for grizz. They get all my respect.

Being a student of the mountain man era i\'ve read a lot about Glass. Some question if any of it is true. Hell of a man if it is.
I don\'t know the validity of any of the Hugh Glass stories but I would suspect his lifestyle automatically makes him a hell a of man! That is the book. Very entertaining read.

I\'m horrible at sharpening. this thing takes all the thinking/technique out of it.
I use that at home, and carry a short piece of round ceramic tubing in my backpack for touching up edges in the field.

I\'m a Lansky guy as well...
I also utilize a worksharp tool. Helps get all of the butchering knives sharpened and I will sharpen my hunting knife before the season with it as well. I also purchased a Havalon Piranta Tracer 22, as it was recommended to my buddy and I by a CO taxidermist, prior to us going on his goat hunt last year. I didn\'t get to use the Havalon last year, but my buddy capped his goat and said it was an awesomely sharp knife to use.
