spin from my other question just out of curiosity. how many years did you hunt for your first big game animal, an how many years til you first elk.
5 for big game
2 for elk

Whitetail was my first in Mass when I was very young. I used a shotgun with a slug back then.

I went on my first elk hunt with my dad when I was also very young. I just went along to watch and learn. My dad got an elk.

I hunted on the next elk hunt with my dad, and got an elk. It was a small 4 point, but my dad was really the reason for my success. He got me into it, and I just had to shoot it. I used a Winchester 94 in 30-30. The shot was 60 yds. It sure tasted good.

From that point on I continued to hunt with my dad, but I was on my own. We went in different directions, and met back in camp for lunch. This was in the mid 50\'s.

I got my first deer the second year I had a tag. I had accompanied my dad several years by that time, so I was familiar with hunting. I hunted elk four or five years before I got a bull. I remember thinking I got one quicker than average, but I fail to remember just when it happened.

First year hunting I was 12 years old. Killed a muley buck. First year elk hunting killed a bull.

It ain\'t been that easy since.

Second year for whitetail
Going on my fifth elk hunt and the elk are winning!

I have been deer hunting for 26 years, got my first on my second year. a little button buck. have been elk hunting 3 years, got a cow on the first year with a rifle.

tagged along with my dad for 4 years before I got to carry a gun. I got a young doe the first year I did.

killed my first (and so far.... only) elk on my 4th trip.

It took me 10 years of hunting to evenutally fill my elk tag. I saw a bunch of elk during those first 10 years, but I always seemed to have the wrong tag or I would be in a position where I couldn\'t get a shot. I was also a \'weekend warrior\' for the majority of those years since I was young and still in school. Most years I would either get to hunt Saturday and either half a day Sunday or, if I was lucky, all of Sunday and half of Monday and then head home. It makes you understand how the success rates can be so low when I would venture to say the majority of elk hunters are weekend warriors. The lack of either sex tags for rifle hunters also makes things difficult. I can\'t tell you how many times I sat there with a cow in the crosshairs only to have a bull tag, or vice versa. Twice, I had a herd of 50+ cows within bow range of me and I got to sit there and stare at my bull tag. There is a lot that goes into filling an elk tag, that\'s for sure. They don\'t get a whole lot easier after taking the first one either ;)
