How to get a response

So I'm hunting in CO GMU 481 and have scouted three different areas.  All areas have good sign (fresh steaming poo, fresh wallows, fresh beds).  I can get close enough approaching from downwind to see both cow and bulls (I have an either sex tag) but all areas are in heavy dark timber/alder/aspen and I just can't get close enough to even think about a shot (<50 yards, preferably <40).  I don't get any response from cow calling, haven't heard a natural elk vs ATV driver bugle so haven't tried myself, and frankly don't know how to make this happen.  This is my first archery hunt, btw.  Seems like the only time I have is when all I know are working and vise versa.  Thoughts?  Charge after them screaming banzai?  Cover myself in scents?  I'm at a loss...

Don't be so passive. Stalk in there or get ahead of them if you are not confident calling. Don't be afraid to fail a time or two. I have learned way more from when I failed than I ever have in success.

I say the same thing. Go after them.  One time we, 3 guys, were creeping on a herd in some thick aspens and before we know it we had creeped right dap in the center of the herd.  We had elk on all sides within 15yrds.  Was pretty cool untill we all (including the elk) got our wits and the herd stampeded with us right in the middle.  Scary, but fun!!!
Good luck and go get them!

If the elk aren't talking, neither should you. Play the wind, use scent spray, and what ever else you have to your advantage. And like everyone said, get in there and be passive aggressive. If it doesn't work out back out and approach them different later in the day or the day after. Chances are the elk are in the timber for a reason. Eventually, they will bed down sometime during the day and maybe that will be the best way to get in <50yds. Good luck and stay persistent.
