Has anyone ever taught hunters safety courses?

I have always been interested in doing something like this and I was looking if anyone else has any experience with it?

I am a certified NBEF instructor and have taught many, many classes in the past. I enjoy it very much, it takes time and if you get a good group together the students really enjoy it. I have not taught any classes lately as our upper leadership in our state is non-existent, and my group has been busy. I used to get three classes together every summer and it was a big hit.

Very cool, Don. :upthumb:

What would you saw was your biggest hurdle?

I have absolutely no issue with public speaking.
I am thinking issues would be difficult parents or none talkative/non participating classes?

I am comfortable taking to groups so that was not a problem for me either.

I think the biggest obstacle was teaching sections of our course that I had to learn more about myself. (like the first aid section) We have numerous chapters or sections that we broke down into time slots. We also had some outside sections (blood trailing, tree-stand safety etc) that we taught. There was a group of 4 of us that divided the sections up and we paired up two of us for each section. The next class we had we would rotate the sections and partners so all of us could teach the entire course.

The big challenge is keeping the class fun, and teaching at the same time. You don\'t want to just read the information with a monotone voice as everyone will be bored. There is sections that people will not be interested but you have to cover them. You will also run into those that need the course to go hunting somewhere and a few of those are upset they have to give up a day for the course as they think they know everything.

I even had a person call me and want me to teach him the course a week before he was leaving out west and he needed it to get his license. He also offered to \"pay\" me for my time if you know what I mean. I never did hear if he got his course in :wtf:

We put together a question sheet and would hand it out at the end of every class and let the students fill it out and hand it in on the way out the door. It was a great way to see how we where doing, and a great satisfaction reading all the comments and how everyone enjoyed it.

If I do it, I really like your end of course survey idea.

Feedback is always very important for tailoring things or getting a good idea of how it\'s going.

I am currently in NM. I found out how to get certified, I just need to see if it\'s honored all throughout the US as well.

We have a guy in our shop that is certified. Get up with me when you come off of your vacation and I will give you his info.

Sounds good! I don\'t know if I would call it a vacation. I am losing my mind hahah

One other thing.

Although you will be teaching, you will learn something from every class you teach. Go in knowing you do not and will not know everything. Its very enjoyable and rewarding.
