I\'ve been planning a scouting trip for the past two weeks now. I took tomorrow off and my fianc? and I were going to head up to the mountains and scout my unit for elk.

Well I just so happens I got sick Monday and have been progressively been getting worse everyday.(I am one of those people who gets sick one every year or year and a half, but it\'s BAD)

Anyways, I feel like I am at about 40-60% depending on the day. I have never been to this unit and have very few weekends left to scout because my antelope hunt is sneaking up, then boom, it\'s elk time.

I am trying to figure out if I should still attempt to go out there and try to scout. Or just rest up and go another weekend.....

Stubborn me is saying go, scout what you can, and then go one more time before the hunt.
Smart me is saying that I will get even worse at a higher elevation and barely be able to hike. So rest up this weekend and scout hard next time before my hunt.

On top of that, my fianc? is super excited to go.....

So what do you go with..... your stubborn self or your brain......

How long does it typically take you to get over these? Seeing as you got it on Monday, I would think you would progressively be getting better by this point. If you think you are, take advantage and have your fiance drive while you get some rest. Then you can at least go see the area and get a feel for it. Boots on the ground is always nice, but sometimes just getting an actual visual of the area helps. There is only so much you can do on google earth...

I was afraid someone would say that because it\'s so true (the boots on ground verse google maps)
When I get sick it\'s usually a few day build up, then three to four days of it full fledged, then it slowly goes away over another two to three days.

I don\'t want to eat tag soup this year so I guess anything is better than nothing.

Thanks CoHunter14

if you go, an i prob woulda at your age, cut back on the amt you hike an take it easy. you dont have to run a marathon up there. go til common sense kicks in then stop. go slow. enjoy. if you go full bore an try an cover the whole unit you wont get anything accomplished but getting sicker. enjoy the time, the fiancee, drive where you can, glass what you can. good luck.

Go! I had chronic bronchitis for the enitire elk season last year and didn\'t miss a day. Elk hunting is hard. This will be good practice. You could easily get sick during the season so nut up and do it!

The bottom line is it\'s up to you, but like cohunter 14 said just checking out the area is a big plus, when you get there if you are feeling up to it take a little hike, but don\'t kill yourself.

my first scout trip of this year..i was sick.

sore throat, down feeling. no energy. i went anyways. did all the driving. i got the scout done. i didnt feel wonderful, it wasnt that fun, but i got the intel i needed.

i ended up puking in the creek the last night. i admit, it probably added to the duration of the illness. a few weeks. i\'m still feeling 2% off. and coming down out of the mountains was painful when my ears wouldnt pop and equalize.

sooo..yea, i would go. :)

There are times when Im not feeling the best and I go up ice fishing, ATVing, hunting or whatever.
And more times than not, the symptoms clear when Im up there!

Id go. Listen to your body. The fresh air just may do you good

I just drove down from the mountains to get some diesel and head back up. I listened to everyone and came out to scout. It\'s been absolute death, but hey, I\'ve been putting boots on the ground and going hard.

I\'ll be coming out of the woods tomorrow and I will have A LOT of questions....

I\'m glad you guys around because a whitetail hunter trying to scout elk for the first time is like a monkey trying to screw a football.

Have a good weekend

Glad to hear you made it out there Dan...hope you feel better. Looking forward to hearing the report!
