holy shananagans!!
for two years my truck had an intermittent noise. i hate noises that come/go since they are so difficult to find and fix. mine was extra weird, since it only happened when the weather and truck was cold. all summer long, in the heat of weather, ZERO NOISE!! i took it to my mech friend, and it flat out stumped him. he could hear it, but in a few minutes of warming up the truck the noise would go away for the day. GONE! there was no rhyme or reasoning with the noise. it would go away if i put the tranny in neutral, or it would get louder in neutral sometimes. pure mental insanity.
it sounded like rumbling sheet metal. a vibration. i checked everything i could. heat shields at the catalytics. rock armor plates, bumpers. i finally thought it was something in my dash..with my luck some duct damping heater door vibrating forever unless i took the dash apart.
i did what everyone does. i searched the internet. one single guy once said, \"it\'s your air intake rubbing against the inner fender panel\". i checked that and mine was bolted tight. i moved on to more suspects. for two years. no other symptoms for two years. motor ran great, no wheel bearings went out. total mystery to me.
yesterday, it was super noisy upon startup. for some reason, it stayed longer past the fast warmup of the motor. i pulled over, jumped out, popped the hood, wife jumps in the driver seat and gently revs it..I FOUND IT!! it was the intake hose rubbing against the fender!! the weather seal wore off and allowed plastic to rub on the sheetmetal like a cricket leg. when the motor is cold, it idles ever so slightly more and at the perfect oscillation. i bought $6 worth of weather seal and went to town. this morning was a california frosty 32 degrees. and NO NOISE!!!
phew!! glad i didnt swap out the tranny hahahhaa..
now to buy new tires and i am ready for the next roadtrip to AZ to hunt. i really want to drive this truck to the ground. i hate truck payments..some mystery noise is the just the thorn in my side to make me crazy enough to buy a new rig. phewX2!
