I went scouting today...

My son and I went up to the high country today. We were itching to go, so we went.

We went into some country I hadnt been in before, hiked up and around.
Crossed some streams and found some snow

Yes, it was warm enough to go shirtless!

We had a close encounter too.

While we were crossing a small meadow, I spotted a cow moose about 40yds ahead.
She had her ears layed back and she WAS NOT HAPPY!

I told my son... BACK UP! BACK UP!

At that time she turned away and a small moose calf was on her heels. Probably wasnt but a few days old.

That coulda been trouble

After we hiked about 2 miles we swung around and headed back to the truck.
Then we drove to another area quite a ways away that we were more familiar with. I was hoping to go in and retrieve a tree stand and put it in a different spot

We noticed there hadnt been many vehicles on this particular road, but a mountain lion had used the road

This went on for over 1/2 mile then it wasnt fun anymore.
This wasnt scouting, and this wasnt cutting firewood.

We decided to bag it for the day and come home

Brad: Those sure look like elk in that first picture alright. I am looking forward to getting out and seeing a few for myself and to make sure I can identify one when the season rolls around again. Right now all I am doing is practice shooting some and waiting.

glad the moose issue turned out ok. i have a very healthy respect for moose. not scared, but wary. looks like a good day.

Thanks for the pics Brad! One question for you: do you leave your tree stands up there year round? I noticed you said you went to retrieve one, so I am making the assumption...

Sometimes, depends on where the stand is at

looks like a lot of fun brad, wish i was closer so i could do that in a day. It would be fun to be watching elk i get tired of always looking at whitetails all the time, I\'m around mule deer too which is fun too though, not as much as that elk scouting trip.

They looked like elk to me. :upthumb:

I bet the forest service appreciates your scouting trips
