Hello, not new to hunting but I am interested in hunting elk in Idaho. I've never hunted there before. What should I be prepared for? Any gear recommendations? Mostly looking at hunting in the northern part of the state.

Thanks for any info.

Are you going to backpack & bivy hunt in deep or try to find an area to base camp from?
Solo or with hunting partners?

Base camp with my 15 year old son. Not looking for a trophy more for the experience.

I was researching moose and deer up in the pan handle and found the areas are pretty thick. At least all the areas I was looking at.  So I just wanted to throw that out.

Some people don't like thick when it comes to elk hunting and just want to glass...
I'm the opposite and prefer the thick stuff.

Unfortunately I've never hunted Idaho, so not much help there, but could definitely help you out from a gear perspective as I'm sure many others here can as well. What additional questions do you have in regards to that?

I dont think hunting Idaho elk would be much different than hunting elk anywhere else.

Same tactics, same gear.

I dont even carry binos as all I hunt is thick stuff

If you are camping from a base camp off a road, it's tough to go wrong with a wall tent. There are a number of solid companies out there who make them. We have got two Davis wall tents and they have been outstanding. One of them is over 24 years old and is still going strong with a couple of minor repairs done over the years. You can see a pic of our camp here:

Straight up, straight down. The whole state is that way. It?s not that bad. Hunted mainly on the east side. Saw some bear tracks, but was per wolf. Bought a wolf tag when I was out by Yellow Pine and never saw one. Really don?t remember any rain. More in Colorado. Good fitting boots are a must. A GPS is a good idea. It can be a long way between roads.
I?ll be back this year.

I haven't hunted ID, just CO and WY, but I used a Kifaru Tut with an 18" cylinder stove  and loved it.  Good for two guys and gear.  Not nearly as roomy as a big canvas tent is for a base/truck camp, but you can still run a stove in it to warm up and dry out.  And, the entire kit (including stove) is less than 6lbs, so if you want to pack it in once you've located elk you can do that too.

I love the look of those kifaru tents and the small stoves they sell too.

I live in NI and what these guys are saying is true. There are some very thick/brushy parts but lots of timber as well. If you are looking to hunt in Sept the panhandle usually doesn't get snow but it can rain.
