If you couldnt hunt...

If you couldnt hunt, what would you do?

There will come a time at some point in our lives when hunting wont be a part of our lives as it is today.
It could be from age, an injury, or maybe a matter of choice.

What will you do if youre not hunting?

Someday, I\'ll be unable to hunt, or ride. If I can drive, I\'ll still camp.

One of the main things I like about hunting is seeing new country. Animals lead you off of roads and trails. I love that.

A friend recently went blind. I\'ve thought about how I\'d deal with that. It would mean no hunting, no riding, no hiking, no reading, no watching a movie, and no seeing a pretty young lady walk by. My need to maintain physical fitness would be severely undercut. I would lose my job. My friend has since somewhat poured himself into a bottle, and I sure hope I wouldn\'t do that, but I won\'t say I\'m \"better\" than that.

So ... although I\'m not sure how to answer your question, Brad, there is one thing that I intend to do: remember the times that I could hunt!

Last week, camping in the Wind River Range, we sat around in the evening bitching about the mosquitos. Morale can take a real dive at such times, but my wife then said \"How can we complain after we just had the prettiest day of horse riding we\'ve ever, ever had?\" And, as usual, she was right. The mosquito bites will go away, but the memory of topping the pass into the Middle Fork Lake valley with it\'s nearly 500 foot waterfall will be with me until I kick!

As I get older, I\'m less scared of disability while at the same time aware of the need to get out while I can.

I would like to think the good Lord will take me before that day comes. Maybe I\'ll still be able to trap? For me I think it would be a sad existence :downthumb:

i dont know. my life is in such turmoil right now that ive lost alot of the joy of season being right around the corner. havnt worked out in over a mos. i had a older friend tell me once that he worried all the time about losing what he could do, but life lets you down easy an it didnt matter anymore. maybe as we get older it just wont matter as much.

I\'ve asked myself this question many times. I could entertain...although some have told me \"Don\'t Quit your Day Job\"!

It would probably be down to golf and photography other than that, depending on my physical status.
And, I wouldn\'t be truly happy

bnsafe-I\'ve tried to PM you a couple of times but when I do it says you don\'t exist. Just wanted to let you know you\'re welcome to ride out with me if you don\'t have any plans end of Aug or first two weeks of September.

Well maybe a good duck hunt or public land whitetail hunt will cheer you up :D

I am hoping this never happens, but like deertick said, I would still camp as long as god wills it.
I also hope by that time I have children who have children and they are all out hunting. I can live vicariously through them :upthumb:

Thats an interesting question, Brad. I think that those of us that love hunting are the kind of individual that could find enjoyment in a lot of different things. My life used to be influenced greatly by the game of basketball. Played organized through college and then in leagues til about 40. I couldn\'t imagine life without it but when the knees gave out and I quit, other things took its place and it wasn\'t that bad without it. Raised registered cattle for 30 years and loved it but sold the last of the cows last fall and winter was kinda nice not feeding! No fence fixin this summer either.
It\'ll be fun watching the kids and grandkids grow and hopefully enjoy the same things I have.
There are things that are infinitely more important than hunting. My Dad passed away last year and the last words he ever spoke to me were, \"I\'m proud of you Son!\" Shooting the biggest bull that ever walked would be awesome but still pales in comparison to making sure I see my Dad again!
I gotta admit though that I sure do enjoy matching wits with big bucks and elk!

I hope that day does not come but if it does I can all ways go fishing. There 100 lakes within 30 miles of my house. So if I can\'t get in a boat anymore I will get a pontoon so I can wheel my sorry butt onto it.

Fishing is what I plan to do when the legs won\'t carry me high into the mountains. I hunt whitetail in Iowa and I have a couple permenant blinds that i could ride the ATV to then hunt from them. Heck if I shoot something I can call my son to come drag it out for me. Thats what kids are for. We take care of them and when we get old it is time for some payback :D

I really don\'t want to think about that day. In my mind, I will do whatever possible to make sure I can keep getting up the hills well into my older years, but I\'m sure some day it won\'t happen. Instead of worrying about that, I think this is just a reminder that you have to enjoy every minute of it while you can. You never know when that day will come...

I\'m close to not hunting elk anymore. It\'s not the hunt, but getting the meat out that stops me.

Next step will be to hunt for just deer.

The last step will be to just fly fish.

When I can\'t do anything? Hell, just throw me in a hole.

I\'ll do the things I\'ve already been doing the first 41 years of my life.

I figure since I didn\'t grow up in a hunting family, and my son and I have hopefully begun a tradition, I will be able to go with my son...maybe even HIS kids, and teach them everything I can about hunting elk, deer, turkey, pheasant, fly fishing, single malt scotch...

When I\'m too old, or broken down too much to participate, I hope I can be a mentor.

Ya just said hunt didn\'t ya?? ;) ;)

I can\'t hunt elk anymore... Givin\' up elk huntin\' really hurt me but I survived...

I now have to rely on my kid\'s, grand kids and huntin\' buddies to duck, deer and turkey hunt ... :( :( And I do mean rely... I stumble around and they carry my huntin\' junk when they can\'t put me right on the spot where we are goin\' to hunt and I can walk that far...

BUT as long as I can \"just go\" with my kids, grand kids and buddies I will... I enjoy just seein\' and listenin\' to what\'s happenin\' out there... :upthumb: :upthumb:

Then when or if the time happens and I can\'t even go, I\'ll bug the heck outa all of um from my smartphone to hear what\'s goin\' on and when I\'ll see the pictures... :D :D

Even though huntin\' will leave my body, it will never leave my soul... :angle: :angle:

If I couldn\'t hunt, what else could I not do? I have my church work. I could write more especially if Brad keeps on asking these goofy questions. Maybe I could even become a full time internet nuisance. I have to settle for being part time now since I plan to hunt when I can. Definitely singing is not in the picture.
