Anybody have any experience with these units? Never really thought about something like this, but getting older and not as flexible as I used to be, maybe some good insurance for my sometime over exuberant travels these days. I\'m a solo hunter and explorer in the wilds of W WA.

Mods, I didn\'t see a place for this in the equipment section. Move at your discretion please. Thanks.

I\'ll move it over to the gear forum.

I have one and like it a lot.

The two communication is nice, integrates with my iPhone easily, battery life is good (100 hours or so). You can send regular updates to a website where your friends can keep track of you.

On drawback is it does not use AA batteries so you will need to recharge occasionally.

Turning it off at night and sending location updates less frequently will greatly extend the battery life.

Dana,

I see you need a subscription plan with those...how does that work and which one do you use?

Right now I\'m on the cheap one, the security plan.

Around July I\'ll upgrade (upgrade is free) to the seasonal plan (I think that is it). This gives me unlimited sent pre defined messages and unlimited location updates. It also gives you some free text (think twitter or IM).

My wife really appreciates the ability to contact me while off grid. Yea it might an hour but it\'s better than a couple of days. Plus she can find me on the map if I should fail to check in. She can also send a locate request from the map web page if she needs to.

Not the cheapest solution out there but it works and keeps momma happy.
