Inventory

This weekend I went through and cataloged all of my firearms and ammo, as well as accessories. Took photos, documented serial numbers, etc.

I am not a \"gunny\" ... or, at least I don\'t consider myself a \"gunny\". I am a mediocre shot and consider myself a \"gun owner\" but that\'s about it. I enjoy shooting, but I\'m not a \"shooter\". I reload, but I don\'t dream about it, or have Excel spreadsheets of powder types, primers, and projectiles.

Yet ... I do own enough arms that, looking at things and counting the rounds of ammo, I think that:

1. If the mainstream media were to characterize my inventory, I\'m sure they\'d use the word \"arsenal\".

2. I prefer the term \"a good start\". I have nothing fancy, \"black\", or scary-looking, or expensive.

3. The San Bernadino shooters were said to have \"over 5000 rounds\" at their home. Really? Seems like that\'s just a \"staple\" like flour and sugar in the kitchen pantry.

Anyway ... I think it\'s a good wintertime activity to go through and catalog your inventory ... put owners manuals where they belong, in a file or folder, write down serial numbers for your home insurance company, do whatever maintenance needs to be done, consolidate loose ammo, etc.

Oh, and go over safety ... prepare for any children that may visit by securing weapons in a safe place, or having a plan for when they come over. If you have children living in your house, or a non-shooting spouse, now is a good time to just go over a basic plan for safety ...

Maybe change the smoke detector batteries, too.

Good job John

I have done the same.
I took digital pics of each and every gun and then named the file with the weapon caliber description and serial number.
Put it on a flash drive and put it in the safe.

Good thinking guys...sounds like something for me to do today since our office just closed because of the snow. I did an ammo inventory a few years back, but haven\'t done it since. I have my guns insured under our homeowners policy, but never thought of recording all of the serial numbers.

I laughed pretty hard at that one John!

:shh: You don\'t want to get put on some watch-list! As for me, I don\'t even own a gun...or ammo. I hunt animals with my camera!

good call.

i need to get off my lazy butt and do inventory. i\'m more interested in serial numbers and stuff. less worried about ammo count.

i am loaded to the gills with ammo..it acts as ballast for my gun safe. 5000 rounds isnt that much really..just the news media trying to whip up a froth with the public. i know guys with 10\'s of thousands of .22 ammo, and that is just about useless for \"tactical\" work, but i bet the media would work that number into the \"count\".. my dove/quail loads would scare folks if it was just a number. :)
