So how early is to early to use Elk Calling as a Strategy? What works earlier a cow mew or a bull bugle?

Calls can still theoretically work at that time of the year, but more than likely it would just work to get something to come to you and check you out. You probably aren't going to be getting a bull to respond that time of year.

Out of curiosity, where are you hunting on August 1st? That sounds early to hunt elk.

Yes, Aug 1 is the opener. I?m scouting this weekend and every day I can get away. Most of the high country with trees is private land with chunks of BLM, so it may be that I have to stash some gear on blm prior to the hunt. I?ve never hunted this area or this early so there?s  a lot to do. So I think a variety of cow calls occasionally sounds like my strategy:)

I?m hunting sept 1st this year (Gila, 1st archery) which is very early for me, so I?ve been pondering this same question.

My guess is that Bulls won?t be interested in cows yet, so cow calling may not help you.  But, they may be interested in other bulls.  Not fighting or challenging like in mid to late September, but just figuring out who/where the competition is.  Maybe try some raking with a few bugles, etc.  I doubt anything will talk back.  Probably just sneak in for a look.

But I would probably be focused on using optics more than anything.
