Is this legal?

I read this on another forum, it relates to second shots or third shots if given the opportunity.

\"I have gotten 3 arrows in two different bulls and a buddy and I got 3 in his bull - he got 2 and I got one.\"

You\'re not allowed to shoot someones animal, right?

I would think as long as ya have a tag both of ya can shoot the same bull and one of ya can tag it but if only one of ya have a tag then the one without a tag can\'t shoot um... That would be a good question to as the CPW...

If you have a tag you can shoot. The one making the killing shot gets the elk. That would be hard to tell with arrows if more than one was in the vitals.

I agree with Still Hunter.

Isn\'t that encouraging \"Party hunting\"? If I shoot a cow elk and then my son \"Shoots, (wink wink)\" the elk after it\'s down, I could have him tag it so I could go after a bull.

I\'m not saying I would do this and in fact, I am so new to this thing I am very much \"by the book\".

Party hunting is a little different. In that sense, a group has \"x\" number of tags to fill -- as a group.

In this situation, if the elk YOU shot is still standing, and I have a shot at him, (and hold a current, legal, and unfilled tag) then I\'m going to shoot him, too. In fact, if any elk walks by my stand with an arrow in it, I\'m going to shoot him if I still have an unfilled tag for him.

Who gets the elk is not something that is generally decided legally but rather hopefully as gentlemen (and ladies).

I sure sounds like the hunters were slinging lots of arrows and brought down some elk. I personally have a problem with that way of hunting. On the other hand if I made a bad shot and hit an elk in the guts, I would want you to put another arrow in it if you could. This would humanely bring it down. With an arrow in the guts, the elk is going to die. Why allow it to suffer and risk losing it? I would expect to tag the elk.
This matter of shooting until you are out of arrows, or there are no more animals around, sends a chill over me. Just my thoughts.

Well, that, too.

It does \"sound like\" that was what was going on ... but I was trying to not draw conclusions, and anyway, the question was if it was legal.

But, you\'re right, Swede, \"that\" kind of hunting is distasteful at best.

Hmmmmm! I wonder if someone on here should have read this last year. Would have saved a trip back to camp for more arrows.

I hope ya\'ll didn\'t think I meant group huntin\' in my 1st reply..

I guess what I was sayin\' is as long as ya have a tag and ya buddy had made a bad hit on the bull it was ok for ya to put a good hit on um, then ya could decide between each other who deserved the bull...

I don\'t like group huntin\'... Never have and never will... Some of my buddies that duck hunt with me think it\'s alright but I don\'t... I kill my ducks and they can kill their\'s... I don\'t need to kill any for um... When I\'m done (3 mallard limit where we hunt) I hang my gun on a tree and watch the fun...

Heck, duck huntin\' is too much fun to spoil it.... :upthumb: :upthumb:

As I stated before 1 elk = 200 or 300 mallard ducks... I can live with that...

Sorry if ya took my 1st post or even this un wrong... :angle: :angle:

Lark, it would be easier to define party hunting as someone filling someone else\'s tag. In other words, say you have a bull tag and your son has a cow tag and he shoots your bull for you...that is party hunting. If you both have a tag and both shoot, I don\'t see how there would be a problem. There is no way for anyone to prove anything, even if they watched the entire encounter. That is how I look at those situations...

Bottom line, and \'Ol Arky basically said it, but hunting is too important to me to ruin it by breaking the rules.

There are two way I understand party hunting takes place.
1. We all hunt together until all tags are filled. When one person fills their tag, they hunt on until every tag is filled.
2. Some have tags and some do not, but everyone hunts.

Yep, and if someone fills someone else\'s tag, that is considered party hunting I believe.

I think the charge would be poaching for those who didn\'t have a tag, and shot an elk. A very serious charge.

I\'m not positive though. They may have a separate charge for party hunting.
