On Tues I took the day off and my wife and I drove two hours to Forest Lake and bought a jeep compass for us and my 15 yr old daughters car. I had bought from this dealer before and everything went just fine. 59,000 miles and they had put new brakes, rotors and tires on. Everyone was happy and excited. Am going to take it to WY in 4 weeks.
Last night about 6 pm my daughter was driving it and the car locks up and skids to a halt....the right front tire has gotten a mind of its own.
I call my wife, then the dealer and send him pics. Put a hundred miles on it, 80 of which was driving it home. He says \"don\'t do anything, i\'m calling my mechanic.\" I then talked to the mechanic. And showed him the pics. I am told to call the tow truck and he will be up in the morning to take a look.
Got home about an hour later than expected, sans one Jeep Compass.
This morning the mechanic drove two hours up here, looked and the car, paid the tow, bought the parts, paid to have the service done locally (the same company, one whom I use and like). Dealer called and confirmed that the vehicle will be done this afternoon and I can pick it up, about 12 miles from my house.
I hate buying used. But the dealer has gone above and beyond to make sure this turns out alright. Turns out a pin came out of the cv shaft. Getting new cv shaft and sway bar, no other damage.
The bad: dealing with used vehicles and dealerships that are 2 hours away.
The GOOD: My daughter was driving in the rain, so she was only doing about 35-40 mph. It was a good \"emergency experience\" for her. she maintained control of the car and made it safely to the side of the road. It hammered home how things can happen so quickly and having two hands on the wheel, charged cell phone, etc etc...
It happened on a flat spot on a very hilly county road, the tow was there in an hour or so. Everyone stayed safe and calm. It happened two days after the salesman said \"take it to WY, it\'s a great vehicle\" and not two months later. If I had been driving I would have been doing 55. I\'m glad it didn\'t happen on the freeway doing 65. The dealer quickly responded by contacting his mechanic and mobilizing everything. And not once did the dealer him and haw about who was paying for tow and service. When I asked both, they said it was already covered by the dealer.
