Mind you I have no idea what I am doing, but I applied for a PP as my 1st choice and then zero-ish point units for my 2-4 choice!!!!
The best part is they are all OTC elk areas too, so if I do draw and hunt them, then I can elk hunt too :upthumb:

Good Luck Dan!

Did you happen to look at the Draw Recap Reports? I assume you know how to do this, but I\'ll post anyway for people that may not know how to read the reports. These reports are much more helpful, as the previous versions required some work to get the data that they show now. One thing to look at with the zero preference point draw out level is if those tags were drawn on first choice or 2nd/3rd/4th choice draws.

Many times I put in for deer and elk draw units, where one could obtain a tag with 0 preference points - but I put in for those particular units with my 2nd, 3rd or 4th choices - and never drew, and couldn\'t figure out why. When I delved deeper into the reports, I found that I would have had to put in for those choices as a first choice and I would never draw them as a 2nd-4th choice.

For example, I just picked a spot in the deer report to help explain:

There is a hunt code DM03404R where the draw out was in the 2nd choice and 9 tags were drawn at that level - which can be seen in the box outlined in grey. So, if you wanted to get this tag, you could do it on your 2nd choice and not loose any preference points. Now, there were some guys that may have \"wasted\" their preference points on their first choice for this tag, as it could have been drawn with zero preference points on a 2nd choice. One guy used 4 points, another used 3, 3 drew with 2 points, 33 drew with 1 point, and 118 drew with 0 pref points - then there were still tags available after the 1st choice was complete. So, that is why I say some of those guys that used more than 1 pref point may have wasted those points, where guys were getting tags with 0 pref points on their first choice and then 9 guys with 0 pre points on a 2nd choice. But, if they knew this going into the draw, and wanted a slam dunk tag, they would definitely get the tag with at least 1 pref point.

On the other hand if you look at hunt code DM03401M, it shows that the draw out level in the grey box was 0 preference points where 118 people drew with no preference points. This is where in the past, I didn\'t pay enough attention to the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th choices - I just thought, \"Oh zero preference points for that tag, so I can get it on my 2nd choice and not use any pref points\". Wrong. In the blue outlined box, you can see that all of the tags were drawn as the 1st choice - there were no tags drawn out for 2nd, 3rd or 4th choice.

Hopefully this helps some people out when analyzing tags to put in for.

This is some GREAT information, Roman!
Thank you for your post.

I tried my best to pay attention to stuff like that. Im pretty sure my second option won\'t pull, but I am confident in my 3 & 4th.
I\'ll PM you my picks.
