wow. the rifle. 257 Weatherby Mag. its a weatherby rifle. the Mark-V. i bought it on a whim when i was young and knew squat about rifles. i really saved my $$. i think i read a Roy Weatherby magazine article or something.
i sighted it in this weekend. had two boxes of the regular 100gr Norma Spitzer bullet. IMHO, a better coyote round. perfect for sighting in. i was hitting .5" groups at 100. i opted to zero it in at the same 100. i got a NM deer hunt this fall. figured i am dragging myself over there, i better get a better bullet. then things got complicated.
in CA, i live under the "non-toxic" rule. with that caliber, i get one factory choice. the Barnes TTSX. thankfully, also in 100gr. i really agonized over it. i could go with the proven Hornady Interlock 100gr since it's NM. or buy a bullet i could use here as well (should the rare need arise - i strictly bowhunt here). researching i found an old Peterson Hunting article where they scanned a bunch of shot animals. the scattering of lead throughout the meat was surprising. the article went on to say you could "eat right up to the hole", with non-toxic.
i took a chance..i have two boxes of factory weatherby 257 ammo on the way. i ordered two to maximize on the shipping charge. it was painful enough..the weatherby "tax".
boy, i hope they group acceptable. i have the new elevation turret installed on my old Leupold. i'm going with the dopecard taped to the gun stock or scope lens cover. i wont order the CDS turret this year.
any thoughts to lead pollution in game meat?
