I'm leaving the Louisville, KY area early on Sept 3rd and looking for a partner in GMU 81 in the San Juan National Forest for a few days.  First timer, I have my pack ready and set to go.  Renting a SAT phone, let me know if your interested.  Just looking to go out and see what happens.  Thanks.

That is super tempting, I wish I could get away and go chase some screaming bulls in CO. Soooo tempting.

ridge63, I wished I had seen your post a couple weeks ago, I would've said something to you.  I thought my partner was going this year, so I contacted an outfitter to basically drop us off and do a drop camp hunt because he has a bummed knee- this was only 4 weeks ago so the plan and available outfitters were limited at best.  Since then, my partner backed out, so I'm flying solo and have a drop camp to myself and a lot of sole searching to do that week  ;) .
I typically hunt GMU 161 in the north park, hunting around Gunnison this year.  The pressure and pine beetle devastation up there has driven me to try something different.
I plan on leaving Louisville on 09/04 ~ 09/13/14, wanted to give it a try before the ML hunters showed up.  I'm not familiar with GMU 81, but have hunted GMU 78- wow what a bad experience.
One of these days I'm going to get drawn for the KY elk hunt and won't have to travel so far.  But, I never get tired of the CO wilderness, always a good time.
Good luck to you and safe travels!

Hey Ridge,
I'm in the same boat as Shadysailor & you. I'm heading out solo for a DIY in the White River NF south of I-70 in Colorado. This will be the 2nd time to this area. My partner cancelled on me for the 2nd year in a row. Ended up not making last year, but planning to head out Friday, 8/29 for the 2 day drive from NC. Saw 4 decent bulls 2 years ago, but with any public land need to get off the beaten path. Plan is to head back 4.5 miles & set up spike camp from Sunday & pull up spikes Saturday am. No cell coverage so bought an InReach SE. Needless to say, wife none to happy I'm going solo. Hardest part is the solitude at night or if a thunderstorm rolls through at high elevations. Sounds like a cannon going off next to you.

usmcvet,
Sounds like we all need to re-evaluate our partners for next year.  I can't say much though, my dad is typically my partner, we've packed out 2 elk and a mule deer together through blood, sweat and tears- just not happening this year. And it kills me. I didn'tget to go last year either, so I'm going this year regardless.

Hunted WR a long time ago and saw several elk, but an entirely different look than what what I'm used to seeing.

Your scenario is a mirror of mine, my wife is mad as he'll I'm going alone, been taking the heat for a couple weeks now.  So, I went out and purchased an inReach as well and I like so far.  I just hope it works in the wilderness and I don't have to use it for an SOS  8) .

I thought I had a long drive, but yours sounds pretty brutal.  I plan on stopping around Kansas City at the midway point  for an evening of good sleep.  It's 96 degrees here today, looking forward to some cooler weather as well!

Shadysailor,
Hopefully your partner/father can make it out next year. It's 95 degrees here now so looking forward to a little cooler & less humid weather. I've got a very understanding wife that I'll be leaving with our twin 3 year old boys. I'll definetly have to do some sucking up when I get back. So curious, were you in the Navy?

usmcvet,
Yes, I did 8 years in the Navy Reserve.  I was in an air cargo unit and deployed for Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom.  Also saw some great sites on the east coast around Norfolk and VA Beach.  My last unit was a MIUWU with Coastal Warfare at Whiteman AFB in the heartland of all places- good times.

Your trip is soon approaching, good luck at WR, safe travels to you and keep us posted on how you did.

that is the unit I hunted last year. I am leaving for Wyoming though the same date but maybe head to co end of the month good luck its a tough terrain area but if u have been preparing should be no problem.
