Lightning

Last August/september I went on my first backcountry elk hunt. We were camped at 11700 feet just above the treeline. While in the woods I noticed most of the big trees had been struck by lightning. Has anyone had any experience with early season lightning storms on top of a mountain around the treeline? I plan on going to the same spot this year just want to be prepared.

My partner and I have experienced this many times, always dangerous. My advice would be to consider dropping down into the trees a little deeper in some gully or cut. A strike within close proximity would be devastating in the high country if not deadly.

Yep, scary stuff.  Like others have said, dropping in elevation or into low lying valleys, river bottoms, canyons etc. and away from the tallest trees around is always a good plan.  I try to keep my camp off of ridges, peaks, and always below treeline. NOAA's site has some good info on lightning if you are looking.
