Below is an area I have taken elk from [topo and aerial of same spot]
A couple miles to the east of the map is a cattle ranch
It has roads and is fairly popular

Where would you hunt?

[some may remember this from a couple years ago]

The drainage in the NW corner.
I see some chuckle head setting a camp on the end of that road though.

First choice would be close to the southwest black mark. Looks like food, water, and cover with a possible spring seep at the head of the creek. Also, it looks to be a good distance from the roads in the area.

I took the topo and marked it up a bit. \'B\' is potential bedding areas, \'S\' is a saddle. This is an interesting area because of all of the roads, but the one neat thing is the majority of the hunting would be downhill from the roads. This, to me, means that the area won\'t get as much pressure as you would think based on the number of roads.

The drainage in the southwest that WW mentioned would also be my \"A\" spot. I could see elk bedding over the top of that ridge on one of the many benches or on the east side of that drainage on the big bench. They would have access to food and water. It looks to me like there could also be additional water in that drainage not shown on the topo (marked water?). I think this simply because of how green and lush it looks on the aerial view.

The area I put a star on would be my \"A-\" spot. I like this because it also looks like there could be water in there. It could give an elk a flatter northeastern facing bedding location with food and water very nearby.

In addition, all of the saddles could definitely be worth checking out as I\'m sure they could get used. The northern most bedding area could be looked at, but if that road gets much use I doubt it would be worth much.

Just looking at that map, I like the SE - just north of the blackmark in the SE corner. I\'m way new at this and looking forward to the feedback from the experts.

Im going with Terry\'s circle on the bottom left. (Well, bottom, center, but you know what I mean)
that spot interests me.

Sometimes the elk wont cross the road and stay to the east. Within 1/2 mile of the road.
If I hunt this area, I will be sure to get in there really early and try to ambush them as they come up.
When they do cross the road, here is the pattern they have used [both clockwise and counterclockwise]
Look at the topo and you can see how they use the natural barriers and road location to get to the saddles to the west.
For an afternoon hunt I will hunt the west side of the road.

I hunted this area during ML season in the late 1990s. I had a cow only tag
One morning, I parked the truck and headed east just below the rock outcroppings in Grid 12
I found a likely spot, sat down and gave a few cow mews.
It wasnt very long when I saw antlers coming toward me.
So here comes this 4 pt bull right up to me.
Im sitting with my back to a tree and he is about 15yds away.
He looks around and drifts off the way he came.
When he was 50yds away, I called again. He turns around and came back the same way.
He stops about 20yds and looks around again.
Not seeing the cow he heard he finally drifts off.
The next morning I went back into same area - a bit further to the east and filled my cow tag.
It was at that very time I switched my future elk quests to mainly archery.

I havent hunted that spot in a long time.... and as far I know, the elk are still doing the same thing...
BTW - its OTC and public land
