Middle Season - Calling Tactics?

JF
All I know is that the first week of season here in Colorado the bugling was basically non-existent.
We had best luck with mews.
We didnt even have much contact with raghorns, other than the one my son shot.

When we go back in 2 weeks, Im hoping the bulls are more vocal so we can adjust our calling to use raking, stomping and bugling along with some mews.

Brad, when you rack and stomp, how long do you do that for on average?

30 seconds and prepare for a shot?

Do you only do it once?

It\'s an interesting tactic that I would like to add to my arsenal.

Dan,
I like to do it at the beginning of a calling sequence, then let a out a bugle, then a mew.
Wait a few mins and see what happens.
I will then maybe reverse the order and once again see what happens.

Anybody plan to use just bugles? How about just cow calls? I rarely mix them this time of year. Anybody else plan to use just one or the other?

I will be using a bugle 90% of the time starting this weekend. Locate, then move in and challenge.

Had no luck with location bugles this past week. We did however call in cows, spikes and small bulls with light cow calling. The only bugling action that I got close to was twice bulls came in and rounded up the cows that were coming to my calling and escorting them away.

Last year I was able to do some cow calling and call in several small cows, we didn't hear any bugling. It was in August for archery season, but I'm really hoping we hear some bugling this year in late august. I wanted to pick up a bugle tube, but I don't think it will help. Anyone think I should buy one?

I stick mostly with cow calls. I?ll break out the bugle and give it a go if they are screaming or use it to try and locate and see if anything is in a canyon.

If bulls are bugling then I usually try to close the distance and challenge them with a bugle. Early season where I typically hunt is very hot so sometimes I will set up by water. Luckily I have the patience to do this,  and have had great results using this tactic. In my experience there is no perfect answer to calling, but rather depends on elk behavior and hunting pressure in my area.

I use my grunt tube more for cow calling than I do bugling. I can "push" my cow calls out further with the tube as well as throw the calls in different directions with and without the tube to sound like a herd. It is also critical in guiding bulls coming in by pointing the tube in a direction behind me and "throwing" a cow call in the direction I need the bull to go. Honestly, my grunt tube is critical to my success. I don't leave camp without it.
YES....buy one.
