Does any one have any advice they are willing to share with non residents from Pa who are going to the big snowies with back packs?

I grew up in Lewistown, which is tucked inbetween the Snowies and Judith mountains.  I would recommend Half Moon Basin.You will hike in on Ulhorn Trail.  Its a long walk in but not a bad hike.  Lots of country in there.  Also, get an updated GPS map from ONXMaps and utilize that to show you unmarked public lands.

Also shows block management that you may not know is there. Very useful tool that is worth every penny.
