I have been looking at the trail cam pics and have my deer picked out for 2014. I am after one deer who is a little odd. I arrowed my first bull elk this year that was a nontypical. I think it would be cool to shoot a NT deer too.

I have passed a few this year holding out for the NT.

I have seen a 10pt that would go 140-145\" That I might stick if he comes close enough. I do have 2 buck tags :D

Can NonResidents get 2 bucks tags in IA too?

I think it is just one but you also get an antlerless tag if I am not mistaken. They might have changed that because the DNR has cut back on doe tags. Our population is half of what it was 10 years ago. All antlerless seasons were closed this year and some counties are buck only during first gun season. It has been at least 15 years since they had that restriction. We have been shooting extra does for several years and after a couple dry years and some EHD infestations the population is down.

As a resident I can get one either sex archery and one either sex gun. As a landowner I also get another either sex for any season I choose. I can actually get three bucks :D

I let another buck walk by last night he passed the first shooting lane at 15yds and the second at 20yds. I tried to get a camera pic but my batteries died because of the cold. I have a trail cam pic of him though. Here he is.

I hope I am not making a mistake passing these guys. I am waiting for a bigger one or the nontypical.

Does IA have a gun season? If so, when does that start?
Are you seeing any new bucks that have moved in from a distance away?

Iowa has an early Muzzleloader season that is residents only and they only give out 7500 tags. This is in mid October. The guns #1 season starts the first Saturday of December for 5 days. The gun season #2 starts the second Saturday of December and goes 9 days. The late Muzzleloader opens the Monday after the #2 gun season closes and goes till January 10th.

I like the fact that Iowa has no gun season until December. This means that most of the heavy moving is over before gun season. I think this helps with the bucks being able to roam for does and not get smacked by a gun. I see a lot less activity the last week of November before the gun season. I see very few bucks during gun season but I sit a few areas on the edge and do not walk the woods. I don\'t want to run them out to be shot on the neighbors. I can drive up my driveway during gun season and see deer laying in the timber. My drive is .4 miles long and across a creek which I built a bridge over.

I think these deer are local ones. I have seen them for a few weeks now but I should be seeing some new ones soon. I have heard of some following does lately. The rut is getting fired up.

It looks like I will have to lower my goals to one of the deer I passed on this year. I learned that my neighbor arrowed the nontypical a week ago. I have seen a few bucks chaseing does lately so I could see a few new ones searching. The temps have dropped a bit below normal as most know. This makes sitting on stand for hours a little tougher if one doesn\'t see anything. I will keep at it till gun season opens Dec 6th.

My fall has been all messed up and just got back on here. That NT was a nice buck. Wished you could have arrowed him. Hopefully he passed along his genes and there be some more like him in the future.
