My plan......

My buddy hunted my unit last year and found some elk in this area, so this is where I will continue scouting/hunting.

This first picture is a snapshot of one of the areas I scouted last time I went out. There were tons of tracks, poop, and what I believe to be scrapes.

that road below that says 306 is non existent and overgrown. Above the box is a creek that has a deep ridge on both sides. I found nice trails with both elk and deer tracks that led to small wallows.

Anyways, all inside that box was small patches of trees with small openings. I found a decent amount of game trails, poop, and rubs in there.

My buddy scouted in that area mid august last year and found elk down that low. Fast forward until Sept 15th and they were long gone.

This is the area my friend ended up finding the elk around the 15th. He shot his elk day 2 of his hunt, the 16th.

The green box is private and someones house. The red box with numbers are 3 large openings that he found elk movement all throughout.

I am going to give you my game plan and I would love to know what you guys think.

First off, I don\'t know why the elk moved up in that month, but I am guessing hunting pressure from the 1-15th guys (which will be me this year)

I am going to scout the 1/2/3 areas this time I go up. I plan on putting a camera out there somewhere that I feel good about. I also plan on putting one in the area that I scouted.

That way when I get out around the 30th, I can pull cameras and see if anything is moving.

I know this isn\'t the best picture, but do you see anything that really sticks out for you experienced guys?

Right now they are under flood warnings and it will rain every day this weekend, but we are going to still go up and scout.
A majority of my time will be in that 1/2/3 area.

Any input would be much appreciated.

Iccy, the two areas you are focusing on are nearly the same distance from the open road. I see no reason one place would have high hunting pressure and not the other. Maybe the elk did get pushed away from one place and moved over to the other. More likely the elk are just moving around feeding and being elk. The entire area is fairly small. I would hunt both areas. Hunt one place on ne day and go to the other on another. Even though you see no fresh sign in an area does not mean they will not soon return.
There my be a reason the elk left one place, but I think that if it was pressure or predators they would have gone farther than to the second spot. This just looks like normal elk movement to me.

BTW this is a good elk topic, maybe John will move it for you if you don\'t mind.

Sorry, I put it in here I guess because of the mapping, but if he wants to move it, that\'s fine.

Also, thanks for tips. I guess I over thought that and you are right, they would be much further out.

I had talked about getting in deeper than everyone, but this areas about 4 miles from my camp. It\'s also off putting to some because it\'s close to that guys property.

These are some zoomed out photos

(the star is my camp)

Most guys go down towards 125, at the end of it are some nice ponds/lakes that apparently people crowd.

Iccy: No problem. It fits either area well. I just thought you would get more hits and feedback if it was in the elk forum.

I get exactly what you\'re saying and agree with you now.

This area is loaded with tall trees. I saw your post a few minutes ago about you seeing an advantage of being in a tree vs ground. Well, my lone wolf climber will be coming out with me just in case I find that great spot

Dan
What is the elevation change from where the elk were early to later?
Is it much?

Also, this isnt a big area.
That can be good and it can be bad.

The good = you can hunt most of it in a few days.

The bad = You can hunt most of it in a few days.

The reason I say this is you have some good recent intel from last year. Dont discredit history until it is proven wrong or different
Elk areas dont have to be big, they just have to be good.
If they arent good, you will need to relocate.

I would first go where the elk went later to see if there is any fresh sign.
If not, then work your way to where they were early.

I did ask him about the elevation and he said it was a decent elevation change. Where I scouted it was much lower than where he ended up hunting/shooting his elk.

He went up a few nights before open and caught on fast the elk had moved.
If you see my second picture, you will notice a star. The night before opening day for him, he sat there glasses bulls. He started there early the next morning and said they were bugling in that area. He set up on 1 the first day, thinking that it was the opening he saw the bulls in, when it was actually 2. Next morning he set up at 2 and sure enough bugling and them coming down the mountain from there.

I agree with you about the intel, that is why I have made that my primary. I do however have some back up spots if it goes poor.

Thank you

I will obviously have more intel this weekend, I just wanted some feedback and you guys are helping a bunch, thanks
