My son Kenny and I went out to the family farm in Nebraska this morning. Birds were roosted on the neighbors over the fence. We setup a hundred yards from the fence (on our side) which was a couple hundred yards from the roost. Without decoys we stayed in the timber and off of the field edge. We had a bit of thunder this morning which produced lot\'s of gobbles.
We got to listen to them for an hour before the group pitched down. I didn\'t start calling until then and mimicked one vocal hen; before long the group was headed in our general direction. There were strutters in the group with 6 or so hens and a bunch of jakes that were fighting each other every couple of minutes. It was a great show as we had them in sight for 30 minutes prior to the shot.
The main group skirted us 75 to 100 yards out but we were able to peel off 3 two year olds with some aggressive yelps. Kenny took this 2 year old one at 20 yards and filled the first of his three tags.
