Hey guys I\'m new on this site. I just got into elk hunting a couple yrs back and I\'m hooked. Looking to learn everything I can. I elk hunt with a bow on public land. I had a real nice 6x6 screaming at me at 50yds on my very 1st hunt ever.

Hey John
Good to have you.
What state do you hunt?
Where are you from?

Id like to know \'how\' you got a 6x6 to scream at you at 50 yds!
That is what its all about

I live in south oklahoma. My father n law took me to colorado elk hunting last 2 years. I\'m hooked now. My brother n law called in the 6x6 for me. I was shaking like a little girl when that bull was screaming at me. Had a friend with us last yr stick a 5x5. I\'m still learning but I\'m 8 up with it now. I deer hunt turkey hunt and even have done some bear baiting here in oklahoma where I live. Glad to join this site!!

Hmmm, what\'s your brother in laws name?..... Tell him I need to borrow him Sep1 for a couple days, Lol

That\'s freakin awesome, I\'ll bet that was a heck of an introduction to elk.

Welcome aboard.

We had heard the bull that morning but he just bugled and left with his cows. When I returned to the same spot that afternoon I heard a bunch of calling that I could tell was some1(not very good at calling) in the spot I was headed. I heard a bull in the distance and went to him. We got within 100yds of him without him knowing we were even there. 1 cow call had him running to me. But being a newbie I missed him. Been on elk both hunts I\'ve been on passing. Several cows but I couldn\'t shoot a cow after missing such a great bull. I did kill my best whitetail 2 weeks later here in oklahoma at 47yds with my bow. After missing the bull.

Living so far away we don\'t get to do much scouting except google earth. I\'m gonna try to go mid sept and stay til we both tag out or it\'s over. Curious if season opener would be better but my hunting buddy thinks rut is our best chance......

I live right on the red river between Durant oklahoma and Sherman Texas. I have a cabin with some land near antlers oklahoma. That\'s where I do most of my hunting. Where a bouts you hunt?

Hello Campers,
I\'m a new guy to this site, I do recognize some names here from another camp,(and I still registered). Lol. I\'ve been hunting and fishing for most of my life. Elk hunted in CO. a number of times, or should I say hiked a number of times? Some close encounters, but never sealed the deal. It\'s been about 14 years since my last trip. Sometimes life happens and that has to be priority. My son and I, and 2 other friends will be going out early Sept. And with all the thoughts, ideas and advice here, I have a way better understanding of what went right and wrong on previous trips. Looking forward to more insight from everybody and can\'t wait to try out some new tactics.

Thanks campers,

Tony

Well howdy Tony - Glad to see ya

So, lets expand on what you mentioned.

Lets hear what you learned about what went right and what went wrong.

Ok, where do I start? First and foremost, in my opinion is elk sounds. But not just the calls themselves, but the timing of them, and understanding why any call is made. Not just going out and randomly making elk sounds.

I now have a better understanding of thermals as well. I don\'t have that completely in hand yet, but I will pay closer attention to it going forward.

I will be more aggressive, not wait for things to happen. I will make them happen.

That\'s a start. Ha.

Welcome Tony, good to have you! There is a bunch of information already on here that you can read up on, but feel free to ask any questions you may have. No such thing as a dumb question around here and there are a bunch of knowledgable folks who would love to help out!
