Awesome forum, looks like there are some experienced elk hunters here.
Obviously I'm a new member here trying to learn as much as I can about elk hunting this year.
This will be my first season archery elk hunting for me, I've been bowhunting for years now with a passion for mule deer. Ive hunted all over the west with a stick.
Im willing to pass on and share info just as much as I'm willing to absorb about elk hunting...Cheers!!

Thanks Cowboy...Im from the great hunting state of California...lol...Not!!
Im just going to do a OTC archery hunt in CO. Im a backpack hunter so I'm physically able to get away from roads. Going to pretty much setup like i do with early season mule deer.

lol hey i wont knock someone from being from cali we have a UK hunter here everyone is welcome politics at the door this is meat and horns talk

There are two of us from the UK that I know of...myself and Bails ;-)

Great resource on this forum and everyone's very willing to give helpful advice

Great to see a melting pot of hunter here...anyone with any advice on OTC Gmu's in CO would be appreciated. I will be bowhunting solo. Also I have a lot of mule deer knowledge in OR,NV, SD,CA to share...

Welcome Sierra Fool!
I'm in SW NM now,but spent 45 yrs hunting for Central Coast Cali. blacktails and Sierra deer.
I've hunted a lot of the west and CA used to be at the top overall on my list for variaty and quality, but it changed. Still some secrets.
Most states have changed IMHO.

I don't bow hunt now but use the same tactics.

And the folks on here know elk. Tons of usefull info for anyone.
And I live with elk 365 dy now....

Welcome to the forum Sierrafool. Lots of good people on this sight. I don't have that many posts, but I read pretty much all if them. Everyone I read is responded to with respect and not degrading someone for a "silly question". They use to say in the Marine Corps, "The only dumb question is the one not asked."
Be warned, elk hunting is addicting and can cause you obsessive thoughts 24/7-365, just ask my wife. CO OTC advice on public lands - take a look at the Colorado D of W website & use their interactive map to help you decide on a spot. Look at the harvest reports not just from last year, but many years for a good pattern. Get away from the crowds if possible. Hike in a couple of miles, but keep in mind as a solo hunter you've got plenty of meat to hump out. Good luck.
