Effective 1/1/2017: New Regulations for What Constitutes Acceptable Proof of Ownership??

Colorado Parks & Wildlife regulations now state that a registration applicant must provide acceptable proof of ownership for boat, snowmobile and off-highway vehicle registrations in the form of one of the following:?

Bill of sale?* that includ?es both the seller and buyer\'s printed names and signatures, the vessel/vehicle identification number (if any), the vessel/vehicle make, model and year (if known), and the date of the sale;

Previous registration certificate issued by a governmental entity that lists the applicant as registered owner;

Manufacturers Certificate of Origin (MCO)/Manufacturer Statement of Origin (MSO);
Certificate of Title;

Any court issued document proving ownership;

A collection of personal property by affidavit form pursuant to 15-12-1201, C.R.S.;

or
A physical inspection form completed by a CPW agent???

Interesting. Luckily I got a bill of sale from the guy I bought my ATV from, but what if I hadn\'t? I assume there are a lot of people out there who won\'t have one. Is this from now on, meaning 2017 and later vehicles?

Thanks Brad. I stumped em this year - borrowed ATV from a friend in OK so I\'m not the owner and not registered to me. They scratched their heads and sold me a OHV sticker but not like the big ones for Registered OHVs. They also suggested getting a note/letter from the owner stating that it was borrowed and I didn\'t own it.

Funny, very similar to what CSP told me when I inquired about a utility trailer from OK that doesn\'t have to be registered there so no tag. No VIN either. What if I get pulled over with a borrowed ATV on a borrowed trailer neither of which is registered? CSP public relations officer said to get a letter from my Dad on the trailer saying, again, it was borrowed and would be returned after hunting season.

Would\'ve been funny to get pulled over and I tell the officer I have a note from my parents to have the trailer!

Perhaps they are trying to identify potentially stolen ATV\'s. I had one stolen out of the bed of my truck a few years ago - the truck was parked in my carport. They broke the window of my truck, put it in neutral and pushed it a few feet forward to have room between it and my wife\'s car parked behind it to maneuver it out. The Denver officer said there were many ATV thefts going on. I\'ll have to make a copy of my ownership and keep it with me.

Not surprised about that at all. I recently had to change out the ignition on my ATV and I was shocked how cheap and easy it was to do. A simple change like that is all it takes and that ATV becomes theirs.

I was re-reading this and this part should be noted

This means only when you apply to register you need proof of ownership.
Once registered, you should be good
