I am looking to put into the New Mexico draw this Year i dont have a lot of hopes of getting it but want to build points, but just in case i get the wild draw luck out. What are some good public areas to put in for? please keep in mind im a diy hunter pack in pack out. Archery

Unfortunately, there is no points system in NM, everyone has the sameodds regardless of how many years you've been unsuccessful.  With NM you get assigned a draw # and then when your name comes up they go through your first 3 choices, so I would definitely rank your choices from best/hardest to draw hunt #1 to a hunt you'd be comfortable taking/easier to draw at #3.  There's good info out there on the units, splits for archery and the draw and success odds for each.  I'd use this info to build a strategy.  Good luck.

Are you a resident or non res.?  The 2014 Big Game book is now available online.  All transactions are online now too. NMG&F
You have to choose wisely if you want to draw. Like stated ,toughest 1st choice,2nd  and then choose a better odds draw for 3rd. Most units hold some great elk, regardless of popularity. My home unit is not well known and next to the most sought after, but just as good of elk numbers.
This last year was first time in 8 yrs I did NOT draw a bull tag, 4 yrs as non-res and now 4 as res.
LO tags are always available.Bow,MZ and any weapon. I used one of my own LO tags for a cow this year.
NM has some of the best elk hunting there is IMHO,and the lack of points system is great.
I hate point game, gave it up in other states after never drawing decent tags.

Im a Missouri resident so i have no choice but to play games with points if i ever want to hunt the hot spots but i am diy hunter so i need a place to go deep in on foot bow hunt with a chance of success or atleast being in the mix.public ground is my usual bag
