Ok, I've saved the money and I'm ready for my first Elk Hunt.  Want to go for a trophy like most of you.  Really want to get the full expereince of being in the mountains, horseback, tent camps, fire pit and letting an arrow go toward a bugeler (sp).  I've looked at Gage Outdoors and they sure have a nice outfit.  No horses or tent camp.  Any other suggestions? After this adventure, I will probably become a DIY guy.  Would like an opportunity at a 300'+.  I'm planning for 2014.

I appreciate any help you can offer.

Majestic Elk,

Your life is about to change! :)

If you're looking for the true backcountry experience, Winterhawk Outfitters in the Flattop WIlderness in Colorado is a great choice. They have incredible stock, and pack in to backcountry tent camps. They have thousands of elk in the area, and you would have a great trip for sure. If you contact them, tell them Corey at Elk101.com sent you and they'll take good care of you!

Good luck!

dont set your hopes to high ,the expereince can change your life ,and your best odds for a 300 + bull are with an outfitter.but on a DIY hunt 300 + bulls are not so ez to come by.It took me 33 bulls before I took a 300 +.But you will never have another vacation that you work so hard for that you will love this much.and a spike bull bugling in your face will still get your blood pumping and make the hair stand up on the back of your neck.Enjoy the ride!!!! every body dies but not every body lives. ;)

You will tremble like a little girl if a rag horn gets 20 yrds from you!  You wont be able to control it,  We all want to shoot Godzilla but again its all about the experience and sometimes any Elk is a good elk.  Good luck and shoot straight

In my time bowhunting DIY public land My buddy and I have called in some awesome bulls, most of which wouldn't be worthy of a taxidermy job.  But they were ALL AWESOME!  What makes them great is the memories created and the accomplishments achieved.  Wouldn't trade some of those spike/rag horn encounters for anything.  Haven't stuck that world class bull yet, but pursuing one of God's finest creatures in the company of true friends...that's the real trophy.  In my humble opinion antler size will not be your most cherished memory at the end of the season.  Good luck and enjoy EVERY minute of your experience.
