I don\'t know how I missed this thread, but welcome Mitch. I think I had read it before and already posted. Anyway, it is good to have you here. I believe you have come to the right place. You can get great advise without an attitude. There are some excellent callers here, and some that are very proficient elk hunters by other means too. Also check out some of our past threads on the subjects you are interested in. Don\'t hesitate to bring them back up if there is something more that would interest you.

John - appreciate your input. I\'ve got a Primos small bugle tube - with the blue snap on reed attached. Never could get a diaphragm cow call to work right so I used a cow girl reed call and the hoochie mama squeeze call. I\'ve ordered some Black Widow diaphragms from Travis so I\'m anxious to try them. I\'ve got a year to figure them out - surely it won\'t take that long. I haven\'t researched any bivy type equipment because I hadn\'t even considered it - but am willing to try anything to be successful. I never hunted until complete dark either because I didn\'t want the 2 mile walk back in the dark. I always headed back early or hunted within 1/2 mile of camp in the evening. So do you simply walk 4 wheeler paths from spot to spot ridge to ridge in the dark contact bugling or are you walking game trails, etc...

I think my boys would do ok with the bivy style but I think it\'s one of those things I won\'t know until we try it.

When I\'m hunting roadless areas, I cruise ridges and hiking trails. Since I don\'t have the 2-3 mile hike in, I get and extra 1-2 hours of dark every morning and night to try contacting. Outside of roadless area I drive to my key points to cover more area.

Don\'t give up on the internal reed work. Everyone and anyone can learn to blow them good. It does take work so don\'t get frustrated....keep at it. And make sure to find yourself a good teacher. I hear iccyman001 is getting pretty good. ;-)

Mitch there are some really good calling vids and sound clips on this sight to practice with.

I am just the opposite of you when calling with a diaphragm I do good on elk but I can not make good turkey sounds. They sound like a cow elk in the turkey woods. :crazy:

FM - I\'ll make sure to check some of them out. Hopefully I can pick up the elk calling techniques while not losing the turkey ones Where you from in MN? I was born and raised there. Used to take the family up to Ely for summer vacations.
