i didnt hear a peep today. notta, nothing. but i talked to another guy in the local town an said the bulls were going crazy. go figure

That just means that the local guy found a herd of elk with a hot cow and so all the bulls in that particular drainage were all fired up.

That is not uncommon for as large as North Park is.
Between the elevation changes, riparian changes, private and public land there is bound to be differences in elk behavior.

yep just this Saturday hit one area in the morning not a single peep hunted till noon and decided to try another location probably 5 miles away hiked up in there waited by a wallow for a while and at 4:30 in the afternoon they started screaming. counted 10 different bulls at one time bugling and ended up with a 5x6 at 55 yrds that I shot while waiting for him to expire had two different bulls within 20 yrds bugling and the rest of the bulls carried on till about 10:00 by the time I left the basin with my last load simply had to have had a hot cow in the area and all the bulls were going nuts I must admit it was an awesome night to be in the woods where I was though :p

thanks for the input guys. this is my third year elk hunting an so far i have heard less than ten bugles total in the daytime. i heard several at nite the first year but none at nite now that i changed to a basecamp. i hear alot of guys talking about bugling but have sure never heard them get all fired up. i just figured you either have to be on private ground with low pressure or back in some hell hole with low pressure. i know the elk are in my area. cant hardly take a step without getting in elk poop, an killed one last year an saw several. guess they just got lock jaw around me.

Last Monday evening, a herd bull was bugling in the evening before sunset in my high pressure area. Later I found out, he has at least 10 cows and at least one satellite, plus a spike hanging around.

My new hunting partner also had 2 bulls bugling last Tuesday evening as they traveled to bedding at sunset between ridges and drainages. That was 2 miles from the other bull.

We went in on Friday morning to locate that herd bull with 10 cows. We waited for him to bugle on top of the bench above a small aspen grove and steep meadow. At 6:30 am, he bugled.

The person I was with was very experienced with calling: cow mews and bugling with mouth reed. He got the herd bull to talk more. Without any calling by us, the herd bull would bugle as he went left to right and back to left along a 200 yard stretch. He stayed inside the trees. I only saw a spike and cow 200 yards up a steep meadow as he bugled above.

My hunting partner tried to make a stalk, but the wind switched to blow uphill and off they went.

Friday morning was the first time I ever heard more than 1 bugle in the 5 years of hunting. I have a significant hearing loss, so it is likely my lack of hearing.

Friday morning was an absolute blast. Now I know why you guys love later in the season when they bugle. I had never experienced anything like it.
