Now What Should I Do #7

It is 0900 November 3. I am rifle hunting with a bull only tag down on a brushy flat very near the Indian River. Visibility is limited due to the brush, but I can see out in several places for 40-50 yards. A small herd of elk has just passed in front of me about 30 yards out. Unfortunately I could not put antlers on any of them. The elk at the back of the herd is big, muscular, has a bleached out looking hide and its head is in the brush. I could not determine its gender. I can hear the other elk are starting to move forward, so this elk will likely move on without showing me any more of its body or head. I have only a few seconds to decide. What do I do now?

Nervous grunt and step out where ya can see him. He\'ll stand there for a few to see who you are.

Go full auto!

:lolno:

I like the nervous grunt idea.

yep cow call or grunt something to try and get this animal to throw his head up I would probably be pretty ready if it is a bull but also be able to move on if its a slick head. Although lark does have a point

So, you folks think a diaphragm in the mouth may have value in November also?
Lark, dang! I should have thought of that.

Diaphragm or reed call will stop elk anytime of the year.
Works like a charm

I would be doing whatever is necessary to verify if that is a legal bull, assuming I have a bull tag. Truthfully, I don\'t normally have a call at the ready when I\'m hunting the rifle season, so I would do whatever it takes. If you can\'t sneak closer, sometimes this requires running or chasing after them, which I have done. It\'s surprising that a lot of times they will stop to look and see what\'s chasing them. Obviously safety needs to be paid attention to if you do this with a rifle in hand and you need to be able to make a quick shot, but it can definitely work.

You guys definitely have me thinking of having a call more \'at the ready\', although I don\'t know if stopping them is going to do any good if you can\'t see it anyway.

Ok, to keep this going a little more, suppose all I have to use is a little bite and blow cow call and a large stick. How can I work one to my advantage? Would rubbing a limb on a tree help?
