once you locate a bull. how close should you close the gap?

I get as close as I think I possibly can before I start to work a bull. I will try and move into where I can be 35 -50 yards away from his herem and then start working him. I like to be agressive.

At least 100 yards.  I prefer being inside 70 yards if the terrain and cover allows it.

The closer I get the odds go up exponentially.

I agree....closer is better. If you can get in close enough to get a shot without setting up, even better! :)

Calling elk becomes exponentially more effective as you get closer to the bull you are calling to. Sometimes, 20-30 yards can even make the difference.

Ideally, I like to be inside 120-150 yards before I get set up and get aggressive.

Works out real well if you can get between him and his cows ;)  or him and a few of his cows.  Got between a bull and one of his cows, cow called behind me and turned the bugle right towards the bull and cut loose! I thought he was gonna run me over.

Within 10 yards.  I try to get as close as I can get without him busting me.

As close as possible without getting busted. This year we got to within 70 yards of a lone bull. We called and called for about 20 min and nothing happened. We knew he was still there he just wasn't responding. So my buddy took a nap for about an hour. When he woke I walked another 30 yards and I could see the bull feeding in the same meadow we first spotted him. My buddy called and he turned and started walking towards us without making a sound. I shot him at 15 yards. Big lesson learned was don't just charge in and if you have to take a nap for an hour then give em a try.

I try to get in as close as possible without being busted.  Then once i have a good set up ill let out  a couple of soft cow calls to see if i can get him to respond or come charging in.
