One Thing

What is the number one thing you have learned that has taken your elk hunting to the level you are at? What is making a difference to you now that was missing in seasons past?

For me it is the ability to see evidence on the ground and to know where to hang a stand. It is looking around a water hole and smelling elk stink, seeing rubs, dusty trails and muddy water and knowing this is where I want to spend some hunting time.

To be honest? Not really any one thing in particular. It\'s a thousand little things that are finally working as one unit. I\'ve put so much time into elk hunting that I can\'t come up with anything new I can do. What I do now just seems to work. After all these decades it\'s finally become....dare I say..........boring. I never thought i\'d say that, but I think i\'ve come to an end for elk hunting.

I still get excited to hunt for muley bucks, but I can\'t get the tag. So, that has lost it\'s appeal too.

Sorry Swede. I didn\'t mean to announce this in this way, and mess up your thread. It just sort of came out when I started to type my answer. I\'ve been thinking on this hard lately.

I\'m done elk hunting. I plan to give my hunting areas to some local hunting friends. They\'ve been bugging me for years to get them.

My new challenge will be bear hunting. It\'s new to me, and i\'m excited about it. Plus, the tag is easy to get every year.

Being an elk forum, and not hunting elk anymore. I don\'t see a reason to continue here. Which should thrill some members here.

It took me several years, but the one thing that has helped me is to realize that elk can be anywhere. I start hunting the moment my feet leave the truck and I don\'t stop until they\'re back in camp. I\'ve seen elk come right out on top of me as I was getting stuff ready, and I\'ve bumped them 20 yards into the woods. Always be ready and always expect to see elk.

One thing I learned?

Elk arent hard to shoot, they are just easy to miss....

Still Hunter: I think there will be a lot of happy elk out there knowing they can rest just a little easier. Best Wishes for a long and prosperous future.

Thank you. You\'re one of the good guys.

Good hunting to you my friend.

Best of luck Still hunter.

I\'ve had bear chili a few times and it was GREAT! I hope you get some :upthumb:

Still Hunter, You say elk hunting is over for you. I have an idea. Hunt elk in a place where bear are. You can tag an elk and be rewarded with the meat. Then sit the carcas and hunt for bear. All you would need is some patience.

I would have to say one thing would be experience. With experience comes all the little things we pick up on the way.

Pete you can always post on the\" Deer Hunting / Other Big Game\" forum about your bear hunting. You also have plenty of knowledge about elk hunting to share from all of your years past.

Terry...........I may post about the bear hunting. If there\'s anything to post about. I might just wander around for a month looking for one.

As for elk? Probably not. My methods are too different, and probably don\'t help anybody. My posts are mostly ignored, except from a few like you. I\'ll probably hunt for a cow this year, but i\'ll keep it to myself.
