Well this has to be the shortest elk hunt I ever had. Opening morning we decided to try some new area that looked very promising. Must have looked real promising because we called in 4 other hunters. After about a 5 mile hike we decided to go back to camp and regroup for the evening hunt. We ate some lunch, then decided to go back to one of my old hunting grounds that they had made a walk in area only. My cousin Matt and I left the truck around 5pm and had planned to hike into an area that had a small clearing where we have called elk into before. After having no luck at the clearing we decided to head out. About halfway back to the truck we were coming around a corner in the road when we heard what we thought was a half hearted bugle. I took a couple more steps to look down an over grown logging road. There about a 100yrds stood an elk, I told my cousin to move back and call while I moved off the road about 10yrds. Matt cow called a few times but the elk just kept feeding. I had good wind and it had been raining so I started to get up to move closer when all the sudden I see antlers coming through the trees. So I quickly sat back down an Drew my bow, the bull stopped at 10yrds straight, I released my arrow and it disappeared directly into the bulls chest. The bull wheeled around and took off only to go 40yrds and pile up. He is a nice 4x5, we quartered him up in the dark hung him in the trees and walked out. We came back in the next morning and packed him out the .26 miles back to the truck. Have to wait till tomorrow to get pics off the camera.

Got the camera working.

Well done Jarod! 1/4 mile.... You should be ashamed! I\'m chomping at the bit, but will have to wait until the weekend, but it\'s on then for the next 2 weeks.

Well done!

I love the early successes. I think there\'s a good year brewing at BTO this year.

Congrats Jared!!! You cant beat it! Opening day and an easy pack out. Great start to 2014 for you!

Believe it or not but this was the second year in a row that I have gotten shots at elk walking on the road either back to camp or to the truck. You just never know when they will show up.

It\'s funny you bring this up. If you read all my posts leading up to my hunt, I was constantly talking about how deep in the woods I wanted to hunt.
I was told that if you get in past a half mile, you cut out most of the hunters. I had planned on going in at least two miles before I started hunting.

Then I end up killing mine 300-500 yards from the road

I hope you can do it again next year!
