Hey all,

Just want to know everyone's opinion on game wardens, district wildlife managers, conservation officers..whatever your state calls them?

I'm a recent grad with a wildlife biology degree, which I got to become a game warden or terrestrial biologist. But now I'm just having second thoughts after kind of just realizing I would have a heck of a lot less time for hunting! As well as wondering if I want all that negative public perception.

I would say stick with it.  It is an honorable career to be a law enforcement officer.  I also think you would be surprised at the amount of time you will have off.  Definitely probably not as much as right now, but most will be in the middle of the week and there is always vacation as with any job.  Also as with every profession there is those individuals who can give anything a bad name.  You can change that though with how you deal with people.

there are good and bad out there its up to you which one you are.Just remember 99% us hunters are your friends and would be glad to help you at your job.I have dealt with both and the good wardens I will go out of my way to help them in any way I can but I have dealt with 2 young wardens with an im better than god attitude and I would let a poacher walk free before I would help these 2 out again. Thanks you to all the good wardens,You make it better for all of us. Good luck with the job its actually the job I wanted I just hated Biology class  ;)

do it and take pride in it!  i've always had great experiences with the game wardens, and i've had a lot of negative experiences with hunters that think laws don't apply to them.  glad to have guys out there trying to set them straight.

Stick with it, I myself am a Police Officer and have been for almost three years now.  It does take a lot of time away from hunting but i love what i do.  There are always going to be people out there that hate you just for the fact that your a law enforcement officer but that comes with the territory.  Just take it in stride and continue to work hard.  All it takes is one person to come up to you and thank you for what you do and it will erase all the mean things people say about you and make your job that much better.

Stay strong and stay safe. Keep up the good work.

I just retired with 32 years as a police officer. You will work your 40 hours and and have days off and vacation to hunt. I started down the game warden road as a young man and got spooked and questined it just like you. I have spent 32 years policing the city of concrete buildings and paved streets. Now, I think I would have rather have spent my time in the mountains and dirt roads. Call a couple game wardens and talk with them about your concerns, they are expierencing it now and can give the best advice.
As far as public image, you will make people look at you how you treat them. Good and bad in any jobs. You just need to be a good, fair and honest person to represent yourself well. The bad ones will reap what they sow.
Good Luck

Thanks guys, I'm glad for the advice. I'm going to keep it as my goal. It's always been my dream, I just hope I can handle the politics and bureaucratic nonsense that comes with state government work!

I agree, you are the one who will ultimately control how you are percieved.  Make em look good.  Good luck!

Just like most people I meet, Ive formed my opinion of game wardens and police officers within the first 30 seconds of meeting them. The ones who were professional, yet personable are a pleasure to deal with. The ones with a chip on their shoulder tend to beless desireable to talk to.

Very well said, most are very nice, but then there is always a jerk too.
