I'm from Ohio and kind of narrowed down OTC states to Idaho, Colorado and Arizona.  Ive never hunted for elk in my life but its something I've always dreamed of doing. I could use some help on narrowing it down some more so I have a good idea of where I should hunt and what state would be best for OTC elk hunting. Any info would be great. Thanks guys

Idaho is great if you can find a place the wolves havent ruined other than that colorado will be your ticket

You know the more I read into Idaho I heard a lot of guys saying they could definitely tell the impact there was on the elk from wolves. Thanks guys. So not trying to sound like an idiot bit how's the OTC thing work? You biy your tags then you can go to any unit you want or are you assigned one?

It may vary a little from State to State, But not all units are OTC, you would need to check the rule book for open units.
Utah also has some OTC tags, but most are for Spikes I believe ?.
I think the WY does too ?.

Utah has OTC tags that are either spike only, or any bull units. Depending on what tag you buy. If you buy an any bull tag you can hunt the any bull units and vice versa. Unless you buy an archery tag, you can hunt all units but may only take a spike or cow in spike only units.
Wyoming is draw only for elk tags.

you can buy OTC on line or in the state at select locations it would be best to have them in pocket before you depart some areas sell out they are first come first serve.

I live and hunt in idaho and you really would have to do your homework to get a good elk spot around here. I've also hunted Corrado for elk and if it's your first time I would go there. High elk population and some really good otc units. Probably won't find a monster bull in them but I've harvested some really respectable bulls out of the otc units.

As well as OTC...I've had a number of guys tell me to [also] buy a pref point for Wyoming and you stand a good chance of drawing next year...that way there are options

Buy the University of Elk Hunting and subscribe to Extreme Elk; LOTS of great advice

CO consistently has OTC leftovers. I get to go with a guide for free this year as my Cuzins live there if my draw comes through. They have all the toys. Jeep, horses and surrounded by GMUs. They scout horseback, hunt afoot and have competition to see who gets one closest to the road.

Lucky you! Let me know if you need a stand in for a cousin!
