I think I am going to get to go this fall. I really have no elk experience at all. CO is likely my state because it\'s the closest and cheapest. All I\'m really looking for is a unit that will allow me to hear some vocal bulls and a chance to call to them. If they actually respond and I get a shot or kill then that\'s a bonus. I just want to be in the mountains somewhere and experience elk. I\'ve been once before and heard one pathetic bugle and seen a ton a of hunters in unit 55. I hope not to have a repeat of that. I will likely be by myself this time as none of my buddies are indicating they will be able to go. Any suggestions...I was looking at at the units on the NM border only because I have heard NM had lots of elk.

You will have a chance at an elk in any of the OTC areas.
The units that border NM are good, but a lot of them have lots of private land, much of it not posted!
IMO the areas that are along the I-70 corridor hold better numbers and there are several OTC options.
In any area that is OTC expect to see other hunters! It\'s just the way that it is.
You can often use this to your advantage by getting into areas where they will push the elk.
How good of shape are you in? I\'ll send you a PM with an area that has decent numbers and you will probably hear some bugling.
