Paleo trail eats

So beyond the obvious... jerky, cashews, almonds...what do folks out there who are paleo-oriented eat out on the trail?  I've always been a big freeze dried guy but they don't really come in "paleo" form.

Also I'm thinking since I'm burning so many calories and consuming so few out on the trail... does it really matter what I eat when I'm in the field for this?  Seems like the civil mindset of consume less exercise more almost gets flipped on it's head out there anyhow.

Any ideas and feedback would be appreciated.

For what it's worth, I don't think it matters a whole lot what you are eating when you are actively hunting. You're burning tons of calories and depleting your glycogen stores at a pretty fast rate. Of course, that doesn't mean you should probably be throwing down Pop Tarts and Twinkies! On the whole though anything with a blend of sugars, fats, and protein is probably good. So trail mixes without the candy but lots of dried fruit is probably good. I like grapes a lot because they're small and full of sugar. It's a bummer when they get smashed though. Raisins are good too as long as they're not they ones coated in sugar and dried up real small and hard. One final dried fruit that I like to pack is dried mangoes (again, not coated in sugar).

GORP.....check out some backpackers sites and see what foods they are eating on the trails. The folks that hike the Appalachin Trail can give some great trail food ideas.

One of the favorites that is mentioned by hunters is the Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwich with strips of bacon.

When I was doing a lot of 18th Century hunter personas we carried parched corn with crushed sugar maple cakes and jerky. It was put into a 4 inch round cloth sack that was about 12 inches long (a tube). A leather thong was tied to each end and worn around the waist, but tied in the front. Protein, carbs and sugars all mixed together. A chunk of triple smoked bacon would be carried in the blanket roll. We survived on this mix for several days at a time.

Strict Paleo can be tough when living out of a pack. I break the rules for long hikes and hunts without any noticeable negatives. Montain house hits the spot for me when I am out.

i eat high calorie nuts and lara bars, homemade date coconut bars, jerky, dried fruits,i usually go through 1000 cal in snacks a day, lighter 'meals' (i dehydrate my own freezer baggie meals) at breaky and before beddy. pemmican is a good option although i have bear concerns where i am and suspect the fat would attract. being gluten/ process chemical free is important to me because i feel bloated, gross and lathargic if i suddenly started eating differently. too much sugar gives me a head ache and i think i get jittery. i will incorporate rice occasionally aswell as powdered sweet potato with cinnamon.
i also put glutamine and creatine in my freezer baggies, sometimes pure whey protein isolate too.
