Got a new toy, a Ruger 10/22 Light Varmint. Saw one of these at a gun show a few weeks back and knew I had to have it. I debated on copying Cliff (Boom) and getting a Savage, but the looks of this one combined with it being semi-auto made me go this route.

I have a cheap red dot on there now but eventually I?ll probably move a Leupold VX-2 2-7x33 over to it. The trigger is pretty crisp considering it?s factory and breaks at just over 3lbs.

Should be a great gun to teach my boys to shoot with and knock a few varmints with as well. Can?t wait to see how it shoots!

Looks nice!
Your boys are going to love that. Just remember to share it haha  :upthumb:

That?s a sweet looking .22. That?s what I learned with, wore some cottonmouths out in my grandpas pond when I was a youngster. Your boys will have fun with that, wished .22 ammo was as cheap as it was when I was a kid.

My grampa bought my daughter an AR-22 when she was born. I'm torn on keeping it open sights or putting glass on it.
I want to find her something like a single shot chipmunk. (That's what I grew up on)

Nice rifle, you'll burn thru a bunch of ammo with that :)

Dan
Check into the 'Lil Henry' mini bolt single shot 22.
Its short, has fiber optic sights and composite stock - perfect for kids

I got one for my son about a dozen years ago and that thing is sweet.
Being a single shot the kids learn to make that shot count :)

I wish I woulda had one when I was a kid

  That is a slick little gun!

my full grown friend shoots a Savage Rascal.  it lookes like a friggen toy.  tiny!!
he just killed a bobcat with it; end of season.
he is deadly with it.

back to the 10/22.

i want one!!  that same friend with the Rascal, has several.  he offered me one.  i might take him up on it.

i really want to modify one for the kicks.  new 20" sporter barrel, stock..a custom trigger...

I thought about going that route, but going this way was less expensive and the Light Varmint models like this (LVT) have a great reputation for being accurate out of the box. Eventually I'd like to clean the trigger up and get it down around 2lbs and I might end up bedding the stock and floating the barrel, but I want to see how it shoots first. There are a number of folks who get 1/2" five shot groups at 50 yards with these models, so I'm holding out some hope. Going to try to get out and shoot it in the next few days, so we'll see!

oh, i bet you get that kinda groups out of the box.  now you just have to wade thru the flotilla of .22 ammo types.

from what i hear, CCI standard velocities are our best hopes.  i cant find any that isnt marked up high around here.  i need to hit up a bassproshop.

i love your rifle.  it doenst have that metal band in the front.  the opposite of free float in my opinion.

i just want to modify something. :)

I've heard the same thing on the CCI's. And I agree on wanting to modify something...I would have loved to go that route myself. Needed to save a little money so have to go basic for now

when is the maiden voyage?  when is the first shoot?

oh, and get ready to buy your kid(s) something..i bet you dont let that one go..

I might try to sneak out for a few minutes this afternoon...even though it's got the red dot on it I'm anxious to see how it shoots!

Well, got some rounds down the tube this afternoon. Good thing ammo is cheap because I am going to go through a bunch with this gun!

Unfortunately I haven't changed out the swivel studs yet, so I cannot attach a bipod. So today's shooting was with my rear bag being used up front and no rear bag in the back. It was also shot with the red dot, which certainly makes things a little more difficult to be crazy accurate with.

The good: the gun put together some decent groups downrange (pic attached). The bad: I was getting some pretty good fliers that would open the groups up from an inch or less at 50 yards to two inches or more. You'll see the fliers in the pic, each one would hit low and right. I couldn't tell which shot was doing this as I couldn't see where they were impacting just using the red dot, so I've got some research to do.

I'd hate for the gun to be flinging 1/2" groups right out of the box anyway! Now I've got something to do for a bit. Next steps will be trying some different ammo and confirming which shots are creating the fliers by using some binocs. I'll probably throw the VX-2 on it at some point soon as well, but we'll see what happens.

Sorry, forgot the pics...

by "out the box" i meant when the barrel gets broken in a bit.

my first 50 shots were disappointing.  it tightened up right away..or i got better and used to the trigger.
