picture test

OK, so the picture didn\'t come out all that great. But if you click on it, it will show up a little better.

Anyhow, this is sort of a before and after photo of two Forgecraft butcher knives I bought for a buck apiece. I ground one of them down and tried to make a hunting knife out of it just for kicks. I left the old hickory scales on it but may try for some type of exotic wood or a micarta handle later on. Notice the grove I made in the bottom of the blade to use with a ferro rod fire starter. It was a fun project and if you keep the blade cool while cutting and grinding on it, you end up with a quality blade.

Forgecraft blades like this one were made back in the 50s when quality really meant something. They were made from 1095 hi carbon steel sawmill bandsaw blades with a Rockwell hardness of 59-60. This makes them excellent for ease of sharpening and edge retention.

Thanks for the reminder Bill. Garage sales are a great place to find old knives like these for very little expense.
