Pointing West

Alright, all you military guys on here. My son just learned today that he's been accepted to The United States Military Academy at West Point. So many emotions going on right now. He also has a very nice scholarship offer from Gonzaga University. There's no doubt that West Point will be challenging, to say the least. He now has a big decision on his hands between the two schools. Of course, I'd love to see him choose West Point, but Gonzaga is also an excellent opportunity.

Have any of you been to West Point, or know someone close who has? If not, how about life in the military in general? I personally have not served, but just about every other male in my family has. Any words of encouragement to help him make the right decision for his life would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all.

Im about to head to the gym. When I get back I'll be able to touch on my military experience.

I'll also text some of my buddies to weigh in on this so you get plenty of feedback.  :upthumb:

I have absolutely no experience with West Point, but I have been in the military now for 12 years. You mentioned that many of your family members have served, so none of this will probably be new news, but I'll still say it anyways.

The military has been nothing, but good to me. Regardless what some people say.... the pay isn't bad, the benefits are great, and you can really set yourself up for success on so many different levels. Whether your son were to do 4 years or 30 he will be able to set his life on the right track.

As an officer your sons quality of life will be pretty nice and improve rapidly with every rank. Where an enlisted member may take a little bit longer. Within 4 years of active service, depending on where your son is stationed, he could be bringing in around 85-100K. Not bad for 4 years in any job.

You cannot beat the 30 days of leave each year - lots of hunting
The TSP is a great investment tool along with other retirement accounts. I've maxed my ROTH TSP and Roth IRA out for along time and I'll be alright.
The pension at 20 years is a nice light at the end of the tunnel.

Etc etc etc.

I could go into much more detail and go on forever, but I have a feeling you know all of this because of all your family members. I just wanted to post and say I think it's great he got accepted and if he were to join I think it would be a great experience!
