Has anyone utilized a pop up hunting blind when elk hunting? I was wondering if it was a negative reaction when hunting water holes, wallows or trails. :help2:

Welcome to the forum Allan! I personally have not used them, but I know of people who have and I think you should be fine. Most animals, including elk, shouldn\'t take any notice.

Ok thanks cohunter! Glad to be here. I have just heard stories that elk know when anything is new or out of place at a water hole or wallow. All I have this year are cow tags for WY. I have never hunted just cow elk with a bow and I am not sure how to go about it.....thought maybe setting up on them on trails or water holes/wallows. Any other suggestions?

I think that sounds like a good plan. The other thing you could do is to get up high and pattern the elk, then place yourself on a trail that they use. This could be either coming from or going to a bedding area, feeding area, etc. Good luck!

I also have heard of guys using them but never have myself. I have built small brush blinds that have worked well. If you choose to deploy a pop up, I would certainly try to brush it in pretty good. They do have a pretty high profile that could put them on alert . Also pay attention to prevailing wind direction, although every time I try to do an ambush at water, the currents are a crapshoot as to what they will do at the moment of truth. Good luck & welcome to the camp!

Ok thanks for the ideas guys!! I can\'t wait to get out to a new area with help from a member here on backtrack!!

Allan ... I don\'t think you\'ll need them (or want them) where you are going ... elk are tough to pattern like a whitetail. Elk in national forests are doubly-tough. Elk aren\'t really all that wary of weirdness ... and in a blind, you can\'t call. Even around a wallow, they really are tough to pattern ... and even so, a simple make-shift ground blind using forest debris is sufficient ... take some para-cord or zip-ties and you have a blind if you want one.

Ok thanks Deertick! What are your suggestions on what method to use? Keeping in mind I only have a cow tag this year. Have you been out hunting yet???

I have been in camp -- not hunting -- see Cnelk\'s hunt thread.

I\'d suggest that you get in likely spots morning and night ... location bugles will get you in the neighborhood sometimes, but other times you\'ll have to guess based on sign ... then, I\'d use cow calls.

Anyone know of a good thread about cow calling, or a link to Cnelk\'s video about how they do it?

I\'m busier than stink right now, but I\'ll get some more info to you sometime this week/weekend. I know you\'re headed out soon.
