Yep...they\'re now regular draw hunts. They thought that\'s what would happen. I\'m glad they\'re still limiting the # of hunters, though others may disagree with me.
I do hope they start to allow predator hunting, but won\'t hold my breath. Bears, lions, and coyotes have been feasting since it became a preserve, and that\'s probably a HUGE reason elk numbers went from ~8K down to ~2K in 15 years. :dk:

As you know, when you drew, you only got one day to scout.
I am wondering if you will get to scout more than that or if it\'s limited to just one day prior still.
Lets go get some of those bears and lions!!!!

Now that Valles Caldera is a National Park (and open year-round), you can scout any time! This past summer during the transition, they offered 24 backcountry passes each day (12 reserved + 12 first-come), and that\'s what I used for scouting. They\'re doing that again this year (http://www.nps.gov/vall/planyourvisit/b ... access.htm). However, cars are restricted to the main road, and most of the old logging roads are closed to vehicles now, so taking a mtn. bike is handy if you really want to get around.
This past year, they gave special access only during the hunts: tent camping inside the caldera, camping in Banco Bonito, and you could park anywhere along the unit borders and enter on foot, bike, or horse (not restricted to the main entrance). Hopefully those will be offered again this year. They did NOT allow predator or small game hunting (not even coyotes or rabbits), but I hope that changes.
Does that help at all? It should still be a fabulous place to hunt.
Sorry to highjack the thread a bit, AndyJ!
