I guess overall they are a good thing. A lot of it is simply unavoidable if they want to control populations as well as maintain trophy units. Personally, I don\'t really know what other way they could go about it in Colorado. I guess they could change the system to be more like the Moose drawing, but that still wouldn\'t solve much.
They are good for the most part. However with the point creep the system doesn\'t favor the guy just getting into the game who wants to hunt a prime unit. I sure wish the CDOW would bring back point banking, they only tried it the one year. There are guys who know they are never going to be able to pull one of the coveted tags, but could use their points to hunt very good units a couple of times.
What Lew said. It\'s about as fair of a system as can be for the limited entree units in Colo. my only regret is not putting in for points from the beginning. I could have been in position to draw my second \" hunt of a lifetime\" tag. Cnelk has drawn 2 of the coveted tags over the last 20 years. The sad thing about the system is that a young hunter that starts applying for points now, will probably be close to too old to do it by the time he has the points to pull one of the top 3 tags in the state. There are several units that are in reach that produce great bulls for not that many points tho. I think if they brought back point banking, it could possibly reduce the creep that plagues us all.my Son & I are sitting on an even dozen points this year & can almost smell those stinky rutting bulls...good luck to all in the upcoming draw.
Well, with a limited resource and unlimited consumers ... some form of rationing is needed.
A point system gets us closer, but there is an implication that when you are buying points you are buying \"something\". You aren\'t. You are getting closer to buying something, but you may never get there, depending on how many others are buying points with you.
A bonus point system takes some of that \"sting\" out ... getting rid of the implied \"eventually, I\'ll get a tag\"-thought.
Point-banking is a temporizing measure, not a strategy for the long run. I hope they do it, though!
Tick: Are you going to be a transgender elk with your next post. What\'s the deal with you being a cow? Even more troubling is the question, will become a transgender elk if I hang out here with you?
Anyway back to the subject at hand. I don\'t like the way the State of Oregon manages their hunting lottery. My biggest gripe is that by micromanaging things on a unit by unit basis, they force more and more hunters into a smaller area. I understand there needs to be a system to restrict hunters, but by allowing folks to buy archery tags, when they have missed out on their favorite rifle hunt, they really load up the nearby areas.
Tick: Arg! You did become a transgender elk. I knew it! Maybe you can reverse the procedure by deleting some posts. Oh well; at least I have a long time before it happens to me.
As Dave mentioned, I have been the benefactor of the Pref Point system. I realized when I moved to Colorado in the 80s, the importance of getting them, saving them and possibly sacrificing better hunting opportunities along the way.
I have always had Pref Points. I used my first ten to hunt GMU 10 in 2000 with a ML.
I then resumed collecting them and used the next 12 in 2012 for GMU 61.
I have been very fortunate that along the way I had very good success in the years between the \'Quality Draws\'
I now have 1 [soon to be 2] and have absolutely no idea what Im going to do with the next bunch I get.
But that leads into the unknown as to what the CPW will do in the future too.
For those that are in favor of Point Banking [like me] we are the minority. But I do believe it will level the playing field, but it will need to be in effect for 3-5 years before that happens.
One way the CPW could address the \'High Point\' / Point Creep\' for those draw areas is to install the Pref Point/ Weighted Point system that is in place for Moose.
Speaking of moose, I collected those Pref Points for 18 years before I got lucky and drew my Once in a Lifetime Colorado Bull Moose tag.
The Pref Point System is a game, you just gotta play
They were good when I had 18, not so good now since I cashed them in last year.
At least with true preference points, you know where you stand. If it takes 12 points and you have 12, you have a good chance of drawing.
With the \"weighted point\" system (moose, sheep, goats, etc., you may never draw, ever, with max weighted points, while a guy with 3+1 might draw this year. So that\'s essentially a random draw for everyone with at least 3 preference points.
All I know is that I am buying my son a point each year now that he is old enough to hunt (12). I would LOVE for him to be able to use them when he is done with college on a hunt of his choice.
